New Zealand’s first assignment after the memorable World Cup final hasn’t been off to a great start. The Kiwis, who would have been high on confidence following their fabulous campaign in the mega-event, where they managed to take the finals to a tied super over, have been presented a tough challenge from minnows Sri Lanka. The team has made most of its home conditions, defeating the visitors in the rain-affected first Test.
After the two-match Test series, both the teams will lock horns in the 3-match T20I series, starting from 1st September. This will also mark a beginning of preparations for the T20 World Cup, which is to be played in Australia next year. Both the teams don’t look threatening in this format and would be looking to change this perception. Both sides will look to give opportunities to more youngsters.
Malinga to lead the side
New Zealand had already announced the squad for the series, and now, Sri Lanka has also declared their 15-member squad. Lasith Malinga, who recently announced retirement from ODI cricket is set to lead the team. Avishka Fernando, who was ignored for the Test series, has also been recalled. The right-hander stole the limelight for scoring 203 runs in 4 games in the World Cup.
The team looks pretty good on paper, with a good blend of young and experienced players. The likes of Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera will hold the key in the batting. Besides this, it would be interesting to see how Shehan Jayasuriya fares since he last played a T20I in 2016. A lot will be expected from Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella as well.
The bowling looks even more composed and well-set. Besides Malinga, Isuru Udana, Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara will hold the key. The spinning duties will be shared by Akila Dananjaya and Lakshan Sandakan. Especially, Sandakan is a player to watch out for. Overall, one can expect this to be a tough series, the one which promises to be an entertaining experience for all the fans.
