Delhi Capitals (DC) opener Shikhar Dhawan entered the history books on Tuesday after scoring his second consecutive century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He became the first player in the history of the cash-rich league to cross the three-figure mark twice in two outings. He smacked an unbeaten 106 off 61 deliveries with 12 fours and 3 sixes to propel the Capitals to 164 runs in their 20 overs.
However, when it comes to T20 cricket overall, Shikhar Dhawan is the ninth cricketer to achieve the feat. The southpaw is the third Indian batsman to do so as well with Ishan Kishan and Unmukt Chand scoring hundreds in the back to back T20 innings. Both of them did it in Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament in 2019 and 2013 respectively.
Rather Chand was the second player to smack tons in two consecutive matches in the shortest format seven years ago. David Warner was the first ever batsman to achieve the special feat in T20 cricket during the now defunct Champions League T20 in 2011. The CLT20 was the tournament where the T20 teams from top countries used to compete for the glory.
Who are the other cricketers in the list?
The unique and special feat has been achieved twice in England’s premier tournament, T20 Blast. Luke Wright, in 2014, and Michael Klinger, in 2015, scored more than 100 runs in consecutive outings. Interestingly, England’s Kevin Pietersen also made it to this list in 2015 smashing two back to back tons while featuring in South Africa’s Ram Slam T20 tournament. Marco Marais and Reeza Hendricks are the two other batsmen to who entered the record book in 2018.
However, it was all about Shikhar Dhawan on the day as he didn’t spare any of the opposition bowlers. He read the conditions well and despite the other batsmen struggling at the other end, he took care of run-scoring. Unfortunately, the Capitals lost the game and the record knock went in vain but the team will be puffed looking at his form and will be hoping that he continues in the same vein.
