The rise of Virat Kohli into legendary status can be attributed to him becoming the Indian captain as the last 3-4 years have been brilliant with the bat for him across all formats. After facing disappointment in the recent World Cup, Kohli ensured India won their first ODI assignment post the mega event. He scored centuries in 2nd and 3rd matches of the 3-match ODI series in the West Indies. As a result, India won the series 2-0 with Kohli winning the player of the match and series awards.
In the 2nd ODI, Virat became the first player to amass 2000 runs in ODI cricket against the Windies and also become the fastest to score 2000 ODI runs against an opponent. With his second consecutive ton, the Indian skipper completed 10000 runs in International cricket while leading the team. Kohli is only the 6th player to achieve this feat and the 2nd from India to do so. MS Dhoni finished with 11207 runs from 332 matches as Indian captain.
Virat Kohli needed only 176 innings for this milestone making him the quickest to get there. He is currently averaging 66.4 as skipper while no other skipper with 6000+ International runs has an average over 50. The previous fastest to 10000 International runs as captain was Ricky Ponting in 225 innings; 49 more than what Kohli needed. While Kohli got to 10k runs in 176 innings, no player before his has even completed 8000 International runs as captain in that many innings. Ponting was also the fastest to that feat taking 187 innings.
In other words, Kohli got to 10000 runs as skipper in 11 innings fewer than anyone needed to complete 8000 International runs as captain. The twin centuries in Trinidad have extended Kohli’s tons as captain to 39 and is only two behind the leader of the list, Ricky Ponting (41). In fact, Kohli is only one hundred away from levelling Ponting record for the most number of ODI tons as captain. Virat now has 21 ODI hundreds as skipper while the former Australian skipper scored 22.
