The ongoing edition of Super Smash, New Zealand‘s domestic T20 competition, has been no less than entertainment for the cricket fans. The 22nd match took place on Sunday between Canterbury and Northern Knights and the records literally went for a toss at the Hagley Oval. Moreover, Leo Carter, the Canterbury batsman, smashed the opposition bowler Anton Devcich for six sixes in an over to create a record.
Chasing 220, the Canterbury were three down and needed 64 runs off the last five overs. Cole McConchie was in the middle along with Leo Carter who was batting on 11 off 12 deliveries. But what followed was absolute carnage! The ball was handed over to Devcich in order to provide the breakthrough but the Northern Knights were carted out of the game itself.
The left-handed put on an exhibition of hitting during the over and let the world know about his leg-side hitting. While the first six of the over went over backward square leg, the next couple were over the deep mid-wicket fielder.
Anton Devcich bags an embarrassing record
Anton Devcich and the Knights were least expecting the carnage and the first three sixes stunned them. The bowler then decided to come over the wicket to stem the run flow. However, that worked only in Leo Carter’s favour as he easily shuffled and continued to clear the ropes. Interestingly, the sixes weren’t too huge and it kept just clearing ropes.
Rather for the final delivery, to avoid the embarrassment, Anton Devcich once again came to bowl round the wicket only to see the length ball on the pads going for a six over deep square leg fielder. The crowd present at the Hagley Oval was thrilled to see some high-quality hitting as Devcich became the seventh bowler overall and fourth in the T20s to concede six sixes in a single over.
Leo Carter etched his name in the history books as it was the first such instance in the Super Smash tournament. As far as the match is concerned, Carter’s unbeaten 70 off just 29 balls with three fours and seven sixes helped the Canterbury gun down 220 with seven balls to spare. His skipper McConchie also played a vital hand scoring 49* off just 25 balls as Canterbury registered a much-needed win in the competition.
