August 5, 2019- The day turned out to be a historic one in the history of the Indian constitution. The government scrapped Article 370 and Article 35A from Jammu and Kashmir. The state has enjoyed the special status for over seven decades. Article 370 came to effect in 1949, a couple of years after India’s independence, and it exempted J&K state from the Indian constitution.
It established a separate constitution and a separate flag. The residents of the state lived with different laws from the other states of the country. Only laws surrounding except defence, finance, foreign affairs and constitution were the same. As far as the scrapping is concerned, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, said that Ladakh would be separated from Jammu & Kashmir.
Narendra Modi to address the nation on August 7
The Modi-led government mentioned in Rajya Sabha that Jammu and Kashmir would be divided into Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh. Shah, also a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, told the parliament about the development of abolishing Article 370. The Honourable Prime Minister is scheduled to address the nation on the revocation of the law on Wednesday, August 7.
The historical decision meant that there won’t be dual citizenship in Jammu and Kashmir and there won’t be any separate flag either. The tensions in the state have been an open secret and the abject condition there was turning worse and didn’t seem like improving by any means. Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti slammed the decision though.
She said that India has failed to keep its promises it made and the move will have ‘catastrophic consequences’ for the sub-continent. The epic move by the Modi government has drawn a lot of praises from every nook and corner of the country.
Even from the cricketing fraternity, a number of them reacted, one of them was Suresh Raina, the Indian left-handed batsman. Raina hailed the law abolition as a ‘landmark move and is looking forward to times, free of the constant tensions.
Raina, who hasn’t played international cricket for more than a year now, took to Twitter and wrote, “Landmark move – the scrapping of #Article370! Looking forward to smoother, and more inclusive times. #JaiHind,”
