India started their post-World Cup campaign on a happy note, defeating the West Indies in all the T20I, ODI and Test series. However, even after the dominating show, India are faced with some issues, one of them is finding a solid opening pair. KL Rahul has failed miserably at the top of the order for quite some time and now Rohit Sharma’s name is in discussion for the opening slot.
Rahul got a couple of starts in the opening Test in Antigua, but didn’t get going at all in the second Test at the Sabina Park, Jamaica. In the second innings of the previous Test, he faced 63 balls and managed only six runs, something which depicted the travails he has faced in the longest format. Owing to the failures, he has had to face a lot of criticism and brickbats from the netizens.
Rahul’s poor form- An opening for Rohit?
In 36 Tests, Rahul has an average of 34.58, not quite intriguing numbers. Rahul’s poor run has been going on since the 2018 tour of England. The Karnataka batsman got a century in the last Test at the Kennington Oval, but apart from that has been dismal. The tour of Australia also turned out to be equivalent to a nightmare for him. He is most likely to make way for Rohit as an opener.
It means that when India lock horns with South Africa on October 2 in Vizag, in all likelihood, Rohit will walk out with Mayank Agarwal as per reports in Pune Mirror. Recently, MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said that the committee will discuss the point of sending Rohit as the opener. The Mumbai batsman has gotten backing from the legendary Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly.
Rohit was lately a part of the squad for the two-match Test series in the West Indies. But he had to warm the benches in both the encounters. In the traditional format, the right-hander bats in the middle order where the likes of Hanuma Vihari and Ajinkya Rahane were preferred ahead of him.
Rohit’s Test numbers at home has been incredible, but it’s his numbers in overseas conditions that have gone against him. He last played Test cricket versus Australia back in December 2018 at the renowned Melbourne Cricket Ground. In that game, he got an unbeaten 63 in the first innings.
