For an employee, the best time of a year is none other than the appraisal time. No, it is not because his/her performances get reviewed for the greater good, but it is because he/she gets rewarded for all the hard work he/she has done in that year. To be exact, every employee eagerly awaits for his/her deserved salary hike, and it is no different in cricket as well. In particular, in IPL, where several individuals ply their trade for contracts worth millions.
Here every cricketer is an important member of their respective franchise, and each one of them plays the game with the same amount of dedication. Still, there is a clear inequality when it comes to the distribution of contracts. While some of them get the best deals, others don’t get it even when they give their best on the field.
In IPL 2020 also, there are some cricketers who earn way less than their counterparts. They have been performing better than the star players of their team, but they are yet to receive their due credit in the form of more worthy contracts. Interestingly, all these players combined earn less than the big stars of the league like MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.
Here is the list Team-wise one player who deserves a salary hike :
1) Mumbai Indians – Suryakumar Yadav ( 3.9 crores)
With a clinical performance against Rajasthan Royals, the Mumbai Indians have raced to the pole position in the points table. The titleholders are clearly making a statement to the other teams. And by the looks of it, the Rohit Sharma-led side will be ‘the team’ to beat going forward in the season.
All their players are playing at the highest level of cricket. One can expect nothing else from them as the team is full of cricketing Goliaths. And the only David amongst them is Suryakumar Yadav. No international experience and no cricketing records to his name, Yadav is just a simple cricketer with a ton of aspirations.
He may also have certain limitations, but he plays the game in his own way and it has been mighty effective for the Mumbai Indians. He has scored over 1000 runs in the last three seasons. Most of those runs have come whenever the team’s star players have failed to make contributions. In other words, he has held their batting unit together in tough conditions.
For all that arduous task, the Mumbaikar only receives a paycheck of 3.9 crores. It is very low compared to the workload carried by him. He certainly deserves a few more millions for helping the team become a formidable force in the league. It will not do any harm to the franchise, and it will only motivate Yadav to do more for the Mumbai camp.
2) Chennai Super Kings – Deepak Chahar (80 lakhs)
Another incidence of failing to finish the game has cost the Chennai Super Kings dearly. Their recent loss to Kolkata Knight Riders again saw the team crumbling under pressure situations, an unusual sight. Now it will be a real test of the team’s character as they need to win most of their remaining games to make it to the playoffs.
Even with all the experience on the side, this Chennai unit has a pool of problems at their disposal. If their struggling middle-order is one, then their unsettled bowling attack is another. The latter has been a headache for them, and their only relief is the presence of Deepak Chahar. In recent times, the pacer has shown a lot of heart with his versatile bowling skills.
Chahar started as a new-ball bowler for the Yellow team in the 2018 edition. That season he played a crucial role in guiding Chennai to their third championship. Then, in the following season, he continued his growth as a cricketer as he shouldered the responsibilities of the team’s death bowling. So in just two years, he has become MS Dhoni’s go-to man in pressure situations.
Still, he has not been given his due credit as he earns a meager sum of 80 lakhs from his IPL contract. That is the lowest salary drawn by a player who is a regular member of the CSK playing XI. It is kind of unfortunate because Chahar has done everything possible the team has asked from him. Hence the franchise needs to reward him more, as he has been one of their consistent performers over the last two seasons.
3) Sunrisers Hyderabad – Kane Williamson (3 crores)
It has been a shaky start for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2020. They started their campaign with a couple of losses and then followed it with two hard-fought wins. And then they again lost the momentum by dropping the game against Mumbai Indians but bounced back immediately with an inspirational performance against Punjab. Still, it will be a tough road for them ahead as they have also lost their premier fast-bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, to injury.
The other biggest concern is their wobbly middle-order, as nobody has shown enough promise. And that’s why to solve the problem, now they have drafted Kane Williamson into the playing XI. It is a good move considering his international experience and his ability to play different roles according to the needs of the team.
For long, Williamson has been under-utilised by the Hyderabad franchise. To an extent, the overseas player rule is also to be blamed for it. The right-hander has only played one complete season in his six-year stint in IPL. In that also, he proved his mettle with his 700 plus runs. That year he also took the team to the finals.
After doing all this, Williamson hasn’t been Hyderabad’s first choice when it comes to giving opportunities and as well as increments. His IPL salary is 3 crores, too low for the amount of his talent. His contemporaries like Virat Kohli and Steve Smith earn almost five times more than him. Thus its time the Sunrisers should try to accommodate him in the playing XI more often and also give him a contract worth his salt.
4) Delhi Capitals – Kagiso Rabada (4.2 crores)
From the action of the first three weeks, one can easily vouch that the Delhi Capitals are certainly one of the top contenders to win this year’s IPL. The Shreyas Iyer-led side has all the ingredients to win a championship. Till now they have won 4 out of their 5 games. And in all of them, they have outclassed the opposition in every aspect of the game.
Their batting unit is full of exuberance and explosive batsmen. If they don’t get runs, then their bowling attack steps up to the plate, which is also full of match-winners. The biggest of them all is Kagiso Rabada. The South African is currently holding the Purple Cap with 12 wickets. And it will only get better as long as he continues to be the strike force for the Capitals.
It seems Rabada hasn’t missed a beat since his breakthrough performances in the last year’s IPL. In fact, he has grown in stature and has also become more consistent in his craft. Whenever the captain has thrown the ball to him he has delivered the goods for them. And it is evident from his bowling strike rate of 12.32, which is the best in the history of the tournament.
However, during all these times, he hasn’t been rewarded enough for his ferocious pace bowling. For the simple reason, that his IPL contract is only worth 4.2 crores. The number doesn’t do any justice to the match-winning performances he has put up for the franchise. Any other team will be keen to give him double his current salary for his services. So Delhi should double his salary as early as possible before the pacer has a second thought about it.
5) Royal Challengers Bangalore – Devdutt Padikkal (20 lakhs)
Unlike most seasons, there are more positives than negatives for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020. The team has played good cricket in the early phase of the tournament. The only worry is that they are losing the plot in big run-chases. They will have to work on it if they want to go deep in the tournament.
Both their batting and bowling departments have contributed in patches. More so, the batting where AB De Villiers and the newcomer, Devdutt Padikkal, have been their guardian angels. The latter has really been a find of the tournament. Even though he has just played five games, Padikkal looks the one who is in for a long haul.
His temperament has already gained him quite a few admirers in the cricketing circle. He has been able to compliment the reputed stars of the team without any fuss. Moreover, Padikkal has looked at ease against international quality bowlers. Hence, it seems finally the RCB fans can pin their hopes on a batsman other than Virat Kohli and ABD.
By all means, Padikkal can be considered one of the smartest buys by the franchise over the past few seasons. Looking at his talent, he is a steal for 20 lakhs. And it will not be wrong if they invest more in him as he can be the successor to Kohli in the future. For sure, Bangalore should retain him for a higher amount and not commit the same old mistake of leaving a good player like him to buy an expensive one.
6) Kings XI Punjab – Mayank Agarwal (1 crore)
After a thumping win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Kings XI Punjab looked set to define their moment in the sun in the IPL. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as expected as the team lost four straight games after that win, including a harrowing loss to Chennai Super Kings. And now, it is back to square one for the team, and they will need something special to qualify for the playoffs.
Their only positive is the in-form dynamic duo of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. While the former has continued his dream run from the last two seasons, it is refreshing to see Mayank finally flourish in the IPL. This year he has shown why he has been one of the most talked batsmen in the country.
Agarwal has played some fearless cricket and has also managed to match Rahul’s audacity at the top, which only a few can do. Besides, he has also been consistent and has played sensible cricket for the sake of the team. In all, the right-hander is coming of age and looks a really good prospect for the Punjab team in the coming seasons.
That’s why the franchise should not waste any time to reward him. Even if that means losing some money from their purse. At the moment, Agarwal is only earning 1 crore from his IPL contract. It is a good amount, but not enough for a player who is playing for the Indian senior team. His stocks are going to rise quickly, and Punjab should make a new deal before the time runs out.
7) Kolkata Knight Riders – Shubman Gill (1.8 crores)
A timely win against the Chennai Super Kings will keep the Kolkata Knight Riders in good stead. They have not been at their best, but the former champions have been able to get crucial points at the start of the season. Still, they need some of their senior players to step-up as the tournament progresses. Otherwise, it will be a bumpy ride for KKR in the coming weeks.
Their top-order looks sorted with the arrival of Rahul Tripathi. But the key to their batting success will be the form of Shubman Gill, who has been their leading run-scorer. With each passing season, he is taking his game to a higher level. Also, the 21-year-old is slowly becoming Kolkata’s batting mainstay.
The youngster has already shown his class with a couple of mature knocks. Especially in the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he played the anchor role to perfection and guided the team in a tricky run-chase. He can also play the big shots whenever the situation demands. In short, he is a complete batsman who is set to rule the IPL in the coming times.
So the Knight Riders should nurture him as long as possible. Luckily they did the right thing by grabbing him for 1.8 crores in his first IPL Draft. And now they should give him an appropriate raise frequently. If he goes into the auction pool, then it might be difficult for the franchise to get for him for a bargain price.
8) Rajasthan Royals – Shreyas Gopal (20 lakhs)
Ever since the Rajasthan Royals left Sharjah, the team has hit a roadblock. They have lost 3 consecutive games. More than the losses, it is the way they have capitulated against the oppositions, which will affect their tempo for the rest of the season. They need to rethink their strategies if they want to make it to the next stage.
Their batting has lost the sting after that initial burst, but the good news is that their bowling unit is getting into their groove. More importantly, the team will be happy with the resurgence of Shreyas Gopal. The leg-spinner put on a good display against Mumbai Indians. He bowled a nagging spell and accounted for two important wickets which will boost his confidence.
Gopal can change the course of a game in a matter of overs, and his 2019 IPL performances are a fine example of that. In that season, he picked up 20 wickets. The other thing about him is that his control over his craft is commendable. He can bowl at any stage of the innings. That’s why he is a key player for the Pink team if they have to get back to the winning ways.
The Royals bagged him in the 2018 auctions for a modest sum of 20 lakhs. At first, it looked like a normal deal, but it has turned into a profitable one in no time. He has shown his capabilities in the last two seasons. So now the franchise should consider him as a valuable asset and also think of renewing his contract. A few more millions to Gopal’s paycheck will ultimately benefit the team only.
