Without an iota of doubt, one can say that 2020 has been a year of unexpected things. Even the sporting world has witnessed quite a few abnormal events. For example, Liverpool winning the Premier League and Dominic Thiem winning a Grand Slam are a couple of them. And it is not limited to that only as now the cricketing spectrum is also witnessing such events.
The destination is none other than the IPL 2020. In its 13th year, the tournament is still finding new ways to enchant the audience. It has already given five Super-Over ties and a dozen of last-over finishes. Apart from that, this year the fans have also seen the most consistent side of the IPL history, Chennai Super Kings implode. One never expects a team led by MS Dhoni floundering under pressure, but it is exactly what is happening in this year’s IPL.
The Chennai Super Kings are losing games from winning situations. They are unable to finish the games, which have been the hallmark of their IPL legacy. Eventually, it has brought them to a point where now they are on the verge of becoming the first team to get eliminated from IPL 2020. So one can expect a lot of changes in the upcoming season. The franchise might find themselves busy at the auction table, not a common sight. They will be eyeing for different players to rebuild their side in the post-Dhoni era.
Here is the list of Team-wise one player whom CSK should target in the next IPL auction :
1) Mumbai Indians – Quinton de Kock
The Mumbai Indians will be a little disappointed with their heartbreaking loss to Kings XI Punjab. In that game, the team had its moments to bag two points and officially become the first team to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2020. Unfortunately, a couple of things didn’t go as per their plans, and now they will have to wait till their next tie against arch-rivals, Chennai Super Kings.
They may have lost the momentum, but there is no doubt that this Mumbai side will bounce back in no time. The reason being the overall balance of the Rohit Sharma led-side. They have match-winners throughout their line-up. Starting from Quinton de Kock in batting to Jasprit Bumrah in bowling, they have a playing XI, which many will envy for. That’s why the franchise will have to make some tough decisions before the next auctions.
They might also have to let go of a player of Quinton’s caliber. The South African keeper-batsman has been on a roll with three consecutive half-centuries in his last three outings. He is also Mumbai’s leading run-scorer in this season with 322 runs in 9 games. And in the last season also he stacked up 500 runs. Still, he might not be retained by the franchise in the coming auctions as the team will be sticking to their core of Sharma, Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, and Pandya brothers.
Well, in that case, CSK should throw in the dice for Quinton. He can solve a whole lot of Chennai’s problems. His keeping and opening skills will be one. The other is his leadership skills, as the Yellow team desperately needs a visionary leader in their rebuilding phase. De Kock is termed one of the smartest brains, and he will be an invaluable asset for the franchise.
2) Delhi Capitals – Shikhar Dhawan
The loss to Kings XI Punjab will be a reality check for the Delhi Capitals. It will teach them an important lesson of not being complacent even when they are the table toppers of the league. Though the team has played like a well-oiled unit, they have some rusty parts. So they will be looking to galvanize them before the business end of the tournament. Moreover, they might need a couple of more wins to maintain their ascendancy in this season.
And considering their form, it will be a surprise if they don’t finish as one of the top two teams at the end of league stages. Such is the versatility of this Delhi side. They have a bunch of game-changers in their playing XI. One of them is Shikhar Dhawan, who is on top of his game with back-to-back centuries. He is the first one to achieve the feat in the league’s history. Delhi will be hoping that he continues his good work for a few more games.
Dhawan has been an under-rated star of the IPL. He has been as consistent as the giants of this league, Virat Kohli and David Warner. It can be proved from his track record as he scored 450 plus runs in each of his last 5 IPL seasons. However, the southpaw might not be in the scheme of Delhi’s plans before the next auctions. The franchise will be looking to retain the youngsters and form a core around them.
That’s where the Chennai Super Kings should cash in. The franchise should get him to add more oomph to their top-order. His experience will be a bonus for the team, as most of their senior players will be retiring soon. He might be 34, but Dhawan has enough gasoline in his tank to fire for a couple of more seasons. Gabbar is a good player of spin and will thrive on the spin-friendly pitches of M Chidambaram.
3) Sunrisers Hyderabad – Manish Pandey
The heat is turned on the Sunrisers Hyderabad with their Super-Over loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. So now the Orange team is in a pickle and needs to win most of their remaining fixtures to have a realistic chance of making to the final four. Right from the start of the tournament, the former champions haven’t looked into their elements. Mainly the team hasn’t played as a unit. Besides, their star players haven’t been consistent enough to help them win important games.
The other thing which is hindering the team’s progress is the constant shuffling of their batting order. Under such circumstances, a player like Manish Pandey has been unable to make his mark. Thus it is highly unlikely that he might be on the retention list of the franchise when the next auctions come around. They might also release him to bulk up their purse as he costs them 11 crores per season.
Manish has been a regular entity in the league. He has played for multiple franchises like RCB and KKR. With the latter, he also won the championship in the 2014 edition. In that year, he also enjoyed his best IPL season with 400 runs. However, since then, Manish has not been at his best. And it is because the teams have been using him as a floater occasionally. He has been pushed up and down the order for various reasons.
Hence it is time that Pandey’s IPL career needs a reboot. And the Chennai Super Kings can do the favor by recruiting him. He is a dependable middle-order batsman and is a perfect fit for them. Pandey’s experience of playing in Indian conditions will be a blessing for them. To add to that, his on-field athleticism will be another advantage for the Yellow team. In all, it is a win-win situation for both the involved.
4) Rajasthan Royals – Ben Stokes
A morale-boosting win against Chennai Super Kings will keep the Rajasthan Royals in good stead for the upcoming games. Still, they have their work cut out as they cannot drop more games for the rest of the season. If they do, then it will make their qualifying chances even more difficult. In other words, for Rajasthan. it has been a season of missed opportunities as most of their players except Jofra Archer have failed to live up to their expectations.
One being England’s World Cup hero, Ben Stokes. At first, the all-rounder couldn’t join the franchise owing to his problems. Then when he arrived at the halfway mark of the tournament, he has been below-par with his performances. So now the franchise will surely have second thoughts about him before the next auctions. The rise of Indian players like Rahul Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal will also make the franchise think twice about his retention.
Stokes is a match-winner in his own right. However, the move to Rajasthan hasn’t worked for him. Here he has not been given a defined role, and it is clear from the frequent change in his batting position in every new season. As a bowler also, he hasn’t found his feet in the Pink jersey. Looking at all these Royals is likely to part ways with Ben very soon.
If it happens, then the Chennai Super Kings should eye for him in the next sell-off. Stokes can fill in the void of a cricketing giant like MS Dhoni. Not as a captain, but as a marquee player who can be the face of the franchise in their new era. His all-around skills and ability to rise for the team in pressure situations will help CSK bring back their glory days. With age on his side, he can be Chennai’s biggest star for the next few seasons.
5) Royal Challengers Bangalore – Washington Sundar
Nowadays, the city of Bangalore is humming the slogan of ‘Ee Sala Cup Namde’ with great zeal. And the reason is their team’s extraordinary performances in the IPL 2020. It seems that the Virat Kohli-led side is finally delivering on their promise. And now, with each passing game, they are turning into a formidable side. With that being said, they will have to iron out some of their flaws if they have to do something special in the tournament.
Much of Bangalore’s success can be attributed to their evergreen star, Ab De Villiers. Along with him, their bowling department has also been impressive. Especially the off-spinner, Washington Sundar who has done a tremendous job for the team. He has provided the captain the required control in the powerplay overs, a concern for them in all these years.
The Tamil Nadu cricketer has loads of talent. It was evident from his debut IPL season, 2017 where he played a crucial part in guiding the Pune franchise to the finals. Thereafter, in the following three seasons, he has been Bangalore’s second-best spinner behind Yuzvendra Chahal. He may not have taken bountiful wickets, but he has played different roles according to the needs of the team. But it might not be enough, as RCB might prefer Devdutt Padikkal and Navdeep Saini ahead of him in the retention list.
Such a move will be a blessing for the Super Kings. They can vie for Sundar in the auctions. And if they get him, it will add more depth to their spin department as currently, they have too many leg-spinners in the squad. The youngster can usher on his home ground. He can form the core of the Chennai team for the next decade or so. His presence will also bring the regional flavor to the team.
6) Kings XI Punjab – Ravi Bishnoi
By beating the top three teams, the Kings XI Punjab has made a perfect start to the second half of the IPL 2020. The team has put their campaign back on track, and now they are eyeing for that elusive playoff spot, which has been a mirage for them in the last five seasons. The return of Chris Gayle to the playing XI has certainly done the trick for them. And not to forget a couple of their youngsters who have helped the team revive their hopes.
One of them is the next-gen leg-spinner, Ravi Bishnoi. In his first season itself, the youngster has shown a lot of promise. He has been the team’s trusted option in the middle-overs by picking up crucial wickets. And sometimes he has also bowled the tough overs at the back end. In a way, the leggie has been one of Punjab’s go-to bowler in this season.
Apart from his bowling skills, the quality which has been most impressive about Bishnoi is his strong mental fortitude. He doesn’t seem to get affected when the batsmen go after him. Instead, he always looks for wickets, and it is evident from his inspiring spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sadly, even after all these performances, he might find himself in the auction pool soon. Punjab will surely bet first on the likes of Nicolas Pooran, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh.
If such a situation arises then, the CSK franchise should go in for him. He can be the fresh face in their spin department, which is full of old warhorses. The Super Kings can nurture him for shaping the core of their new team, post the MS Dhoni era. On top of that, Bishnoi will enjoy bowling on the slow surfaces of M. Chidambaram.
7) Kolkata Knight Riders – Lockie Ferguson
Even though the Kolkata Knight Riders are still in the race of playoff contention, the team is digging a hole for themselves. They are playing some sloppy cricket. And add to that to their woes, the change in captaincy and injuries to key players has come at the wrong time. They should be careful, as things can quickly escalate out of their hands with the kind of hammering they received from the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In this season, the Knight Riders have been carried by individual brilliance. Its best example is Lockie Ferguson, who has been the only ray of hope in their bowling department. The Kiwi pacer has given the team the necessary boost with his ability to extract raw pace on UAE pitches. And now it appears a mistake on Kolkata’s part to bench him for the first half of the season.
Lockie is a wicket-taking bowler, and it is clear from his two outings in the IPL 2020. In that, he also won a Man of the Match award for his game-changing spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad. But somehow, Kolkata doesn’t seem to trust him with his skills. That’s why he has only played 7 games in 2 seasons. Besides, the presence of Pat Cummins has also made him the secondary overseas bowling option. So by the looks of it, he might be released ahead of the next auctions.
Looking at that as an opportunity, the Chennai Super Kings should try to make him an offer. Ferguson will be able to inject the required dose of pace, which the current CSK pace attack lacks. He can form a lethal combination with the likes of Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran. In all, he can change the dynamism of the CSK bowling attack, which has been mostly dependent on spin bowlers till now.
