Day 2 of the ongoing last Test of the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia at The Gabba in Brisbane saw India’s opening batsman Rohit Sharma getting brutally trolled on social media by fans, veteran players, and cricket analysts and pundits. Sharma had joined the Indian set-up ahead of the third Test at Sydney Cricket Ground after completing his mandatory 14-day quarantine period.
In the Sydney Test, Rohit started off well in both innings as he was able to middle the ball well and had set the stage for a big knock. However, he had failed to convert his knock into something substantial as he flattened while trying to play a rash shot. His scores at Sydney read 26 (77) and 52 (98) respectively.
The viewers witnessed something similar at The Gabba too. India had put high stakes on opener Rohit Sharma in the first innings for providing an exemplary start to the team. Rohit was looking ominous to Australia as he produced a classy show while scoring 44 runs off 74 deliveries.
Mitchell Starc completes an easy catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma
However, the batsman again threw his wicket away and gave a gift to the opposition. In the 20th over, the veteran spinner Nathan Lyon had set up a trap for Sharma as there were a deep square leg and a long-on. Lyon flighted the delivery, and Rohit Sharma charged down the track to hit the ball for a six, however, the ball went straight to Mitchell Starc at Long on. This resulted in the momentum getting completely shifted towards the hosts.
As Rohit was massively lambasted on social media for his trash shot, the former batsman and renowned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar, who is known for his blunt statements and harsh words, also took to his official Twitter handle to criticize the opener for playing that particular shot despite being an experienced player and knowing that the Men in Blue are without the services of many of their key players in both bowling and batting department.
“Considering the experience missing in the team, that shot from an experienced Rohit Sharma was inexcusable. #AUSvsIND,” Sanjay Manjrekar tweeted.
