So, Rohit Sharma had got a start on second day of the 4th Test, looked good to kick on and get a big score, and perished yet again. This would definitely be frustrating for the Indian team as well as an Indian cricket fan. Rohit was cruising on 44, and looked all set to kick on and get a big score.
But then, Nathan Lyon’s guile and flight proved to be his undoing. The ‘Hitman’ tried to impose himself on Lyon, came down the track and hit the ball straight down the throat of Mitchell Starc at Long On. It was not as if Lyon had got him with an unplayable delivery. What was frustrating was the fact that Rohit Sharma had just thrown his start away, and given Australia a sniff.
Former Indian opener and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at Rohit Sharma for that shot. Gavaskar termed it as an ‘unbelievable shot’, and also added that there were two fielders in the deep- long on and deep square leg. Gavaskar also added that Rohit could not offer any excuse for playing such a shot. The ‘Little Master’ also termed the shot as unnecessary and added that Rohit had just gifted his wicket away.
That was an irresponsible shot from Rohit Sharma: Sunil Gavaskar
“Why?Why?Why? That’s an unbelievable shot. That’s an irresponsible shot. There is a fielder there at deep square leg. You’ve just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier, why would you play that shot? You’re a senior player, there’s no excuse, absolutely no excuse for that shot. An unnecessary wicket, an unnecessary wicket, gifted away. Totally unnecessary,” lashed out Gavaskar replying to a video put out by 11 cricket on Rohit’s dismissal.
The day of 4th Test hangs in the balance
As of this writing, the match between India and Australia hangs in the balance. Tim Paine and Cameron Green put on a useful stand of 98 runs for the sixth wicket as Australia ended their first innings with a competitive score of 369 on the board. For India, T.Natarajan, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur picked up three wickets apiece.
In reply, India have lost two wickets with the scorecard reading 62/2 at the tea break and light showers have halted the play. While Rohit was dismissed by Lyon, youngster Shubman Gill departed after he edged Pat Cummins straight into the hands of Steve Smith at slip. Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Ajinkya Rahane are occupying the crease. It remains to be seen if the experienced duo can forge a partnership and thwart the Australian bowling attack.
