The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League auctions are done and dusted and we have finally got the completed squads of each of the eight franchises. It was a high-voltage with bidding ward ensuing among the franchises in order to claim the rights of the best players in the world.
While bidding wars ensued when the names of cricketers like Pat Cummins, Sheldon Cottrell, Glenn Maxwell cane up, One such bidding war ensued which no one expected. It happened when veteran leg-spinner and two-time Indian Premier League champion, Piyush Chawla’s name was called up.
A bidding war ensued between Kings XI Punjab and three-time champions Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings. Both the franchises went hammer and tongs to claim the services of the leg-spinner. Ultimately, it was the Chennai Super Kings who gobbled the veteran leg-spinner for a whopping amount of Rs 6.75 Crores.
Naturally, Chawla, who is released by the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the 2019 auction was chuffed to bits with the prospects of playing for the franchise and especially under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Speaking to the media, Chawla was quoted as saying by Times Now, “There can’t be a better team than CSK to play for and better captain than MS Dhoni. As a player, you always want to be with a good team, play under a good captain and you can’t have a better team than CSK and a better leader than Mahi Bhai. I can’t ask for more,”
Piyush Chawla will play under MS Dhoni after a period of nine years
Chennai Super Kings move to go for Piyush Chawla turned heads, considering the fact that the MS Dhoni-led outfit already boasts of spinners like Mitchell Santner, Harbhajan Singh, Karn Sharma, and Imran Tahir. However, Chennai Super Kings wanted to free up one of the overseas slots and Chawla’s inclusion will allow them to do so. Chawla, who was a part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup-winning squads made his International debut under MS Dhoni back in 2007.
Apart from Piyush Chawal, another high-profile pick that Chennai Super Kings went for was England’s all-rounder Sam Curran. Curran too attracted a bidding war which ultimately ended with the ‘Whistle Podu’ gang racking up the English all-rounder for a hefty sum of Rs 5.5 Crores.
