Glenn Maxwell, the swashbuckling Australian batter, has been left out of the national squad for the three-match ODI series against India, starting January 14 2020. But Aaron Finch, who’s the skipper for the tour, said that the door isn’t completely shut on him. Maxwell recently returned to cricket after going on a break to address is mental health back at the end of October.
The Aussie captain stated that Maxwell has been left out since he has been a tad short of runs in one day cricket of late. Finch called him a ‘three-dimensional’ player and reckons that it’s only a matter of time before the Victorian hits his straps at the highest level.
No doubt Maxwell will be back: Finch
“Obviously he’ll (Maxwell) be disappointed, like everyone who missed out is but at the end of the day he just hasn’t got the runs required of a top order player in one-day cricket recently,” Finch was quoted as saying in cricket.com.au.
“No doubt he’ll be back. He’s a gun. A three-dimensional player that can have such a huge impact. It’s just a matter of time, he’ll get some runs and be right back up there in the frame again,” Finch mentioned.
Maxwell is now set to captain the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing 2019-20 Big Bash League (BBL). In the same tournament, Finch will also lead the Melbourne Renegades, the defending champions, whose first match is on Thursday, December 19 against the Sydney Thunder.
As far as the upcoming series is concerned, the selectors have left out quite a few big names, including Nathan Lyon. Instead, the selectors resorted to picking Ashton Agar, who’s currently a part of Perth Scorchers in the BBL. Talking about the same, Finch said that the team wanted a spin-bowling all-rounder and hence, Lyon, unfortunately, had to face the axe.
“(Lyon) can still play a future part. We saw the way he bowled in the World Cup when he got his opportunity. Just probably a change in our approach to the spinning all-rounder in Agar as opposed to the medium-pace all-rounder, that’s probably where someone had to drop out and unfortunately that was Nath (Lyon),” Finch added.
