Ireland didn’t get to take part in the 2019 World Cup due to the 10-team rule. But the team isn’t down on spirit by any stretch of the imagination. The Irishmen, led by the experienced William Porterfield, are currently playing the one-off Test match versus England at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. And they have played exceptionally, defying all the odds.
Quite expectantly, the mood in their camp is relaxing. The same can be comprehended from a moment of playfulness between right-handed batsman James McCollum and speedster Tim Murtagh. In a video doing the rounds on social media, the 37-year-old Murtagh can be seen pulling down McCollum’s trousers, coming from behind, surprising the youngster.
McCollum looked back and saw Murtagh coming towards him, but the opener wouldn’t have expected Murtagh to play the naughty trick with him. All-rounder Stuart Thompson was standing beside McCollum and he had a good laugh about the funny occurring.

Ireland having a great time
After losing the toss and being put in to field first, Ireland shot the Three Lions out for a paltry 85. Murtagh, who has a truckload of experience playing at the Home of Cricket, turned out to be the wrecker in chief. Murtagh plays for Middlesex in the English County circuit and he brought all his experience into play, churning out an awe-inspiring five-wicket haul.
Thereafter, the visitors got themselves up to 207, managing a 122-run lead. Andrew Balbirnie top-scored with 55 coupled with useful knocks from Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien. McCollum tried his heart out in the middle for 54 balls, but could only manage 19 runs with the help of three fours. In the second innings, the Brits were bowled out for 303 in 77.5 overs.
Jack Leach and Jason Roy threatened to take the game away from Ireland with knocks of 92 and 72 respectively. But Porterfield’s men didn’t allow the pressure to build. Murtagh bowled well in the second innings as well, though he only managed to pick up one wicket of Leach. Thompson did his bit as well and picked up three crucial wickets on the second day.
