Lockie Ferguson, the Kiwi right-arm pacer has become a vital part of New Zealand cricket team in the limited-overs in the past one year. He has impressed everyone with his brilliant performances in white-ball cricket. Now, he could be lined up for his Test debut against Australia in the upcoming Test series as far as his teammate Tim Southee is concerned.
The 28-year-old has played 36 ODIs and 8 T20Is for New Zealand so far and has grabbed 81 wickets. If anyone casts light towards his first-class stats, they also look commendable with 153 wickets in 42 games.
Tim Southee opines on Lockie Ferguson
Southee said that Lockie Ferguson has performed extremely well in the limited-overs for New Zealand. He also holds the brilliant record in first-class cricket. The right-arm pacer was in the squad that locked horns with England in the recently concluded Test series but didn’t get a chance to play against them.
Ferguson bowls at a brilliant pace and can swing the ball in both the directions. He is an added variation in the team and is waiting for his chance to come in the longer format.
Southee also praised Niel Wagner, who has established himself in the team as one of the premium bowlers. He is excited to play in Australia and is performing well for New Zealand irrespective of the conditions. The senior Kiwi bowler feels that this side is almost settled but it is good to have a bowler like Lockie Ferguson in the team as he will be an important player in Australia.
“Lockie has done extremely well in white-ball cricket in his start to his international career. He has got a great first-class record with the red ball and has been around the group for a wee while with the England series. He is just waiting (for) his chance. He obviously brings out and outpace with Tim and I swing it. And Neil (Wagner) brings his own unique style to the game as well.
“Neil will be thoroughly excited about the chance to play a Test match in Australia. Neil will do Neil’s thing and he’s been brilliant for us for a long period of time in different conditions. It’s a side that has been reasonably settled for a long time but it’s nice to have Lockie Ferguson who can bowl out and outpace. So it’s nice to have another variation sitting there waiting for his chance.” Tim Southee told the reporters in Perth as quoted by News18.
The first game of the three-match Test series between New Zealand and Australia is scheduled to be played at Perth Stadium in Perth followed by the next games in Melbourne and Sydney.
