It’s been a manic 2019 and there were multiple things that unfolded in the cricketing calendar. There was a lot of interaction of players on social media as well. With a crazy fan following, people worship certain players and follow them everywhere.
Social media has become a big part of day-to-day life. Sportspersons often post various things for various reasons. In 2019, there were multiple sports handles that were at the top and were good. However, here are the top 10 sports handles in India and these are only male superstars:
Note: Time period considered is between January 1st 2019 to November 15th 2019.
10. Jasprit Bumrah
There’s hardly any talk about Jasprit Bumrah and his life on social media. He always slips under the radar and there is very little to no discussion at all. Bumrah’s rise in international cricket has been phenomenal. In just about 3-4 years, the Gujarat lad is already India’s leading fast bowler across formats.
On social media, Bumrah posts quite a few pictures and also, a few videos. There are single pictures which he’s put with inspiring captions while there are other pictures with his family. In the recent past, he’s also posted a couple of videos showing his progress as he is coming back from injury. India’s lead fast bowler has 2.3 million followers on Twitter.
Bumrah is currently out injured and is expected to be back in January for the New Zealand tour. Over the years, the speedster has established himself as a vital cog of the Indian bowling force.
9. Ravindra Jadeja
There may not have been a year before where Ravindra Jadeja was as vocal in 2019. He not only spoke out on Twitter, he even let his performances do the talking. Jadeja has been excellent across formats and has been India’s premier all-rounder and be it with bat or ball, he’s delivered.
However, he was on fire on Twitter. He faced a lot of flak from Sanjay Manjrekar in one of India’s World Cup games and it didn’t go down well with Jadeja. He lashed out at the former cricketer and the Saurashtra was trending all over Twitter. In a couple of days, he shut his critics with a fabulous performance in the World Cup semi-final.
Jadeja has also put up a lot of other pictures. There are a few promotional tweets as well. However, Jadeja was on fire both on the field and also, on social media this year.
8. Hardik Pandya
Back in January this year, Hardik Pandya was trending on social media and it wasn’t for a positive reason. People were calling for his head and wanted him to be punished severely. The Baroda all-rounder had appeared in a talk show and had made sexist comments and it was his appearance with KL Rahul put the duo in trouble.
However, Pandya (along with Rahul) received punishments and were out of the game for some time before being fined. Apart from that, Pandya has had an up and down year. He’s had off-field issues and also injury issues. He’s constantly been on the sidelines nursing niggles and injuries.
He underwent a back surgery in the UK and he hasn’t played a game since September. The 25-year-old constantly posts about his fitness, progress with respect to injury, birthday wishes and training videos as well. His interaction on social media is pretty high and hence, he is among the top ten sports social handles in 2019.
7. Yuvraj Singh
It was in June earlier this year Yuvraj Singh decided to hang up his boots and not be associated with the BCCI. That has allowed him to take part in overseas T20 leagues and on the back of that, Yuvraj played in the Global T20 league. The Punjab southpaw is very popular on Twitter and is an active user as well.
There is quite a bit of fun and leg-pulling when Yuvraj is involved in certain tweets. Moreover, like others, there are birthday wishes and congratulatory messages as well. However, there are also other posts about his foundation, ‘YouWeCan’.
It is an initiative taken by him to spread awareness about the fatal cancer disease. Yuvraj himself faced it and beat cancer and returned to the field. He is one of the most inspiring cricketers going around and has been doing well to spread awareness and that contributes to him becoming one of the top sports handles in 2019.
6. Harbhajan Singh
This may be a slightly surprising name on this list. Harbhajan Singh is seen more in the commentary box and doing media duty these days. The Punjab off-spinner hasn’t retired from any form of cricket but he’s largely playing only the IPL and only a couple of domestic games here and there.
However, Harbhajan has about 10.3 million followers on Twitter and he is pretty active there. He often posts wishing others on their birthday or even congratulating other people on various occasions. Moreover, from the time he shifted his IPL base to Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Harbhajan has started to put out tweets in Tamil as well.
5. Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag was an entertainer both on and off the field and now, he’s brought the entertainment to social media. The former Indian opener is one of the most entertaining characters on Twitter. His tweets, his replies are witty and funny.
The way Sehwag wishes his friends and former teammates on birthdays is excellent as well. He doesn’t follow a set template and often makes the wishes hilarious and enjoyable. Moreover, he often appreciates the performance of the Indian team as well and there are occasional tweets for promotions as well.
He last donned the Indian jersey in 2013 and retired from all formats in late 2015. However, he’s made his presence felt on Twitter and also, in the commentary box (Hindi).
4. Sachin Tendulkar
It’s been over six years since Sachin Tendulkar bid adieu to the game and yet, he is continued to be worshipped like his playing days. He is one of the popular figures on social media. He is very active on Twitter and there are constant updates from his page which has more than 31 million followers.
Tendulkar promotes a lot of social causes and shares social messages as well. He is constantly following all the cricketing action from around the world and doesn’t forget to applaud good performances, especially when it comes to the Indian cricket team. Also, the highest-ever run-getter in international cricket hardly forgets to wish anyone on their birthdays.
In fact, his birthday tweets are always different and they stand out. Tendulkar even tries to have some fun and play around with his friends and former teammates.
3. Rohit Sharma
2019 has been the year of Rohit Sharma. He has had a fabulous year and has been India’s premier run-getter across formats. Be it red-ball or white-ball cricket, the Mumbaikar has been in fine form and has been scoring runs consistently.
He had a phenomenal time in ODI cricket and also, the World Cup, where he finished as the leading run-getter (648 runs) and also scored five hundreds. However, it is his return to Test cricket that will give him the most satisfaction. Rohit was promoted to open the batting and he’s relished in that role. In five Tests, he’s scored 556 runs which includes three tons.
Moreover, he was also blessed with a baby girl at the start of the year and that has filled up most of his social media posts. The other things have been promotions and also, about pictures from different games and with the Indian team. He is pretty active on social media and has more than 15 million followers on Twitter.
2. MS Dhoni
Throughout the year, there was one constant speculation. That is, when is MS Dhoni going to retire. There were a lot of rumours that he might bid adieu to the game after the 2019 World Cup but that did not happen but the speculations continue.
The former Indian skipper was last seen in India colours in India’s heartbreaking semi-final loss against New Zealand in the World Cup in July earlier this year. Since then, he’s been on sabbatical and has recently got back to training. However, there is news that he might not return in the near future but will play the 2020 season of the IPL.
Moreover, Dhoni doesn’t even post a lot on social media. In fact, since the World Cup, there have been only three posts and all of them were Instagram links. Despite being almost disconnected from social media, Dhoni occupies the second spot on the list of top sports handles in 2019 (for males).
1. Virat Kohli
There is absolutely no surprise that Virat Kohli tops this list. The current Indian skipper is one of the most active cricketers on social media. He has as many as 32.6 million followers on Twitter which is one of the most among cricketers at the moment.
Kohli often posts quite a few pictures about himself, the Indian team, his wife Anushka Sharma and is often seen wishing a few of them on their birthdays. Moreover, there are also promotional posts where he endorses a few brands. There are thousands of likes and retweets on every post is his as well.
On the field, he’s had a successful year as well. He averages more than 60 in each of the formats in the calendar year 2019. Overall, he is the leading run-getter in international cricket in 2019. Kohli has amassed 2366 runs at an average of 67.60 across formats and has scored seven tons and 13 fifties.
