Rohit Sharma flattered to deceive yet again. He was on top of the Australian bowlers, had helped himself to 44, but a rash shot just when things were going smoothly ended his stay at the crease. The ‘Hitman’ just gifted his wicket away to the Aussies. What would have angered the fans was the manner in which Rohit was dismissed.
The wily Nathan Lyon had already set the trap for Rohit Sharma. There was a deep square leg and a long on in place for Rohit. Lyon flighted the delivery, and Rohit Sharma fell to the trap. The opener charged down the track, and hit the ball straight to Mitchell Starc at Long on. Even batting great Sunil Gavaskar lambasted Rohit and termed his dismissal as an irresponsible one.
Even the netizens could not control their frustration and anger and blasted the ‘Hitman’ for his dismissal. He scored 44 runs off 74 deliveries with six glorious fours to his name and it seemed as if he will score big.
Australia has a slight advantage at Tea
At the stroke of Tea, the Indian scorecard read 62/2. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane are currently occupying the crease for the visitors. The highly impressive Shubman Gill failed to get going in the fourth Test. To a probing delivery from Pat Cummins, the youngster poked at the cherry, edged it and the ball landed into the waiting hands of Steve Smith. Gill departed, after having scored just 7 runs.
The next man to depart was Rohit Sharma, in a manner that has angered Indian fans, and gifted Lyon his 397th Test wicket. The final session of the day would be very important from an Indian perspective. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane and veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara will have to make sure that they forge a partnership.
On the other hand, Australia will be looking to find a breakthrough, by dismissing either, or even both of the experienced campaigners of the Indian batting line up. The Indian side still trails the Australian total by 307 runs and there is a long way to go in this Test match.
As far as the Aussies are concerned, Marnus Labuschagne continued his good run with the willow and scored 108 in the first innings. He was ably supported by batting maestro Steve Smith, Matthew Wade, Cameron Green and skipper Tim Paine, who all made useful contributions.
It was the debutant’s day out with the ball, as far as the Indian team is concerned. The two debutants, T Natarajan and Washington Sundar picked up three wickets apiece for the visitors. It remains to be seen how this Test match will pan out, with three full days left in the match. The onus will be on the Indian batsmen to get as close as possible to Australia’s first innings total. But they should certainly avoid playing the shots like Rohit Sharma did.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Considering the experience missing in the team, that shot from an experienced Rohit Sharma was inexcusable. #AUSvsIND

Big moment in the game. Rohit had started looking ominous for Australia.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) January 16, 2021
Such an unnecessary and rash shot. Rohit did the same in the second innings in Sydney. Just when you think India were clawing their way back after an early wicket, they just swing thr momentum back Australia’s way!
— Bharath (@bharathwaj) January 16, 2021
44*(73) with no demons in the pitch & you’re well set. I’m sure Rohit Sharma will be very disappointed with his shot selection. He’s a world class player! Being a senior player with a Test series levelled at 1-1 (just to give context to the series) that was a big wicket #AUSvIND

Only Rohit Sharma can stop himself from making a big score and we saw in the last three innings in Australia.

This is utter nonsense from Rohit. What on earth the need to play this shot, when u r set for a big score??If at all India going to give Aus a 100+lead & the subsequent loss of this game..it is definitely going to be this rash shot of Rohit..Pujara won't play this even he is on 200
— Navaneetha Kannan (@uvnavanee) January 16, 2021
Gavaskar (in Channel 7) "You are a senior player, there is no excuse, absolutely no excuse for that shot from Rohit".
— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) January 16, 2021
I don't understand whenever he steps out to go big and bowler changes his ball's line-length then why doesn't he try to play grounded shot instead
Once he made his mind he go fir big no matter it looks vulnerable or not
— Naman (@Akshays_Rohit45) January 16, 2021
Totally careless shot…from ecstasy to Agony…😢
— Rohit Kumar//ରୋହିତ କୁମାର🇮🇳 (@rohitkumar_142) January 16, 2021
clearly that shot was not needed considering the inexperienced lineups in both and batting and bowling.
— Rohit Shiva Federer (@ShivaFederer) January 16, 2021
Have seen Rohit Sharma play similar shots at Southampton (2014), Colombo (2015), Centurion (2018). Add SCG & Gabba (2021).
Problem isn’t he takes on bowler & that extra risk when set. Problem is not pulling it off.
Rohit is playing the same overseas Test again & again.#AUSvIND

Not comparing him to anyone but I don't see any rash shot from other senior players of team untill team is in comfortable position. Such as Rahane and kohli. All three of them have almost similar style of play but Rohit can't control himself from Ariel shots.
