It seems it has been ages since we watched some highly competitive T20 cricket but the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 has come as a sigh of relief. Undoubtedly, one of the most exciting brands of T20 cricket is played in the Caribbean and the fans thoroughly enjoyed the first day of action. Two matches were played on the opening day of the tournament. In the first, the Trinbago Knight Riders took on the Guyana Amazon Warriors. And in the following game, the Barbados Tridents were up against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
Sunil Narine was the star for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the first match. The 32-year-old picked up two wickets and scored 50 runs off 28 balls. As a result, his team chased down a target of 145 in a 17-over game with four wickets and two balls to spare. In the other match, Rashid Khan and Mitchell Santner contributed both with the ball and the bat in a closely-fought game. Their efforts helped the Defending Champions Barbados Tridents with their first game by 6 runs.
CPL organisers come up with a new idea
While all the action on the field was one side of the coin, it was the stands that managed to grab a lot of attention. In a couple of the stands in the stadium, the organisers put up cut-outs of the audience cheering for the teams. While this looked realistic for some, some felt that it was a bad idea. Moreover, the CPL organisers also decided to use ‘fake crowd noise’ for the opening two games to keep the broadcast on the television more realistic.
This idea has received many interesting responses from the fans. Quite a few were disappointed to see cricket matches being conducted like this. It was disheartening for them to see that stadiums without crowds. Some even feared that the IPL would have to recreate scenes like this. Some of the fans termed the ‘fake noise’ as ‘ear poison’ while a couple of them felt there was no need to put ‘fake people’ in the stands.

I think we can all agree that the vuvuzela is incredibly annoying at sporting events. So you can imagine my surprise when I discover that the broadcast partners of the CPL have decided to implement fake vuvuzela noise in the absence of crowd. Ear poison #CPL2020
