Pakistan was forced to follow-on despite the valiant efforts of Babar Azam and Yasir Shah in the Adelaide Test. Starting the day at 6-96, the duo added another 105 runs on the third afternoon as Azam flayed the Aussie bowling attack to the tune of his sumptuous cover-drives while Shah racked up his maiden First-Class century to help the visitors past the 300-run mark.
But, even that wasn’t enough as the hosts piled on the agony by enforcing the follow-on at the Adelaide Oval. With over seven sessions to go, Pakistan needed their top-3- Shan Masood, Imam Ul Haq, and Azhar Ali- to put some resistance against the relentless of the trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
Did they? They didn’t. Once again Imam-Ul-Haq had no clue against the pace and accuracy of the fast bowlers and was completely squared up by a bowl that nipped back into his pads and was adjudged leg-before-wicket for a nine-ball duck. And, as expected, the fans had a field day on social media.
The selection of Imam Ul Haq- nephew of former Pakistan captain and chief selector Inzamam-Ul-Haq – has always come under scrutiny by fans. And, it gets accentuated to the hilt whenever the left-handed batsman is given an opportunity to open in Test cricket.
In 44 FC games, Imam-ul-Haq has scored 2558 runs at an average of 35.52 with the help of five hundred and 14 half-centuries but his Test match numbers and his continued failure at the highest level that has repeatedly drawn the ire from the fans. In 10 Tests that Imam has played, the southpaw has managed just 483 runs at an average of 28.41 and three half-centuries.
Imam was included in the Adelaide Test ahead of a seasoned campaigner in Abid Ali, someone who has scored more than 7,000 First-Class runs. And, fans on social media can’t fathom why? Taking of Pakistan’s second innings, the visitors lost crucial wickets of skipper Azhar Ali and Babar Azam and were left gasping for breath at 3-29. When Pakistan does go on to eventually lose the game, it will be their fourteenth consecutive Test defeat on Australian soil- a new world record for the most defeats suffered by a team in a particular country.
