The Gabba in Brisbane was a witness to one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the history of the BBL. The Melbourne Renegades made a comeback in the match from nowhere and defeated the Brisbane Heat by 44 runs. It was also their second successive victory in the tournament. For the Heat, it remains to be seen how they recover mentally from the abysmal batting performance.
Renegades put up a competitive score
The Heat did a reasonable job after electing to field first. The hosts restricted the Renegades to 164 in 20 overs. Barring Marcus Harris and skipper Daniel Christian, all the other visitors’ batters got starts. But unfortunately, none of them could go on and kick on. Shaun Marsh opened the batting and scored 27 runs. Sam Harper, Will Sutherland and Mohammad Nabi also scored in the 20s.
Beau Webster top-scored with 36 off 26 with three fours and a six. But the impetus came from Samit Patel, who turned up with a 10-ball 23 in the dying stages of the innings. He was also involved in a 34-run stand with Nabi off 14 deliveries. For the Heat, Ben Laughlin was the most successful with three wickets. Ben Cutting chipped in with two wickets while James Pattinson churned out one.
The hosts made a stupendous start, scoring 84 runs in the powerplay. Chris Lynn and Sam Heazlett took the Renegades bowling by the scruff of its neck and brought the target down to 81 off the last 84 balls at less than a run-a-ball. Lynn scored a 15-ball 41 before he perished to Andrew Fekete. Heazlett also notched 56 off 37. But once Lynn’s wicket went down, the visitors made a comeback.
Cameron Boyce nipped out Matt Renshaw and AB de Villiers to push the hosts on the backfoot. In the last 44 balls, the Heat needed 52 runs with seven wickets in hand. And then the Heat resorted to suicidal batting, getting bowled out for 120. Boyce along with Patel and Christian left the hosts’ innings in utter shambles. In fact, the Heat lost their last seven wickets in a space of a mere 16 balls.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the Heat’s shambolic batting show: –
If Brisbane Heat were a subcontinental side they’be done for match fixing. Pathetic.

Is there a more gutless team in the history of cricket – any version of cricket – than the 2019/20 Brisbane Heat? Fold like laundry as soon as the slightest pressure comes on #BBL09

Brilliant commentary from @RickyPonting and @Bazmccullum as they spoke bluntly about the Brisbane Heat. If the @BBL is going to go to the next level, it must be taken seriously by all involved. Otherwise, it’ll fizzle out.

Brisbane Heat is all about the individual. How far can Lynn hit it? How much media exposure can Darren Lehman get? Downhill skiers just looking for the next franchise cricket contract. #BBL09
