The Melbourne Stars’ fairy-tale journey in 2020 continued. The team, led by Glenn Maxwell, has now won seven matches in a row in the ongoing BBL. This time around, they thumped the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets at the Perth Stadium. With the resounding victory, the Stars strengthened their grip at the top of the table. The Scorchers need to go back to the drawing board at the earliest.
Scorchers capitulate after Inglis blitz
The Scorchers’ decision to bat first didn’t spring a surprise bearing in mind the numbers, favouring the team, defending totals. Nathan Coulter-Nile got Liam Livingstone, but Jos Inglis went berserk. In the first five overs, the hosts piled 48 runs, 37 of which came of Inglis’ bat. The opener’s knock came off 19 balls with four fours and a couple of sixes. The Scorchers’ innings fell apart from there on.
Glenn Maxwell got rid of the big fish to spark a collapse. After Inglis’ dismissal, the Scorchers managed 38 runs in 53 balls, losing seven wickets. In fact, barring Inglis, only Cameron Bancroft (10) got into the double-figures. Jackson Coleman, who picked three wickets, got big fish Mitchell Marsh. Sandeep Lamichhane brushed off the tail and the Scorchers were bowled out for 86 in 13.5 overs.
Stars race to yet another triumph
The Scorchers needed to make early inroads to make any sort of a comeback. Jhye Richardson conceded a single in his first. But Hilton Cartwright (19) and Marcus Stoinis (39*) didn’t let panic sneak in by any means. The duo put on 47 for the first wicket, though a tad over a run-a-ball. Mitchell Marsh broke the stand after Cartwright gave a simple caught and bowled to the bowler.
Fawad Ahmed foxed Ben Dunk to pick up the second Stars’ wicket. At the other end, Stoinis looked in ominous touch and got to 500 runs. Following Dunk’s dismissal, Seb Gotch joined Marcus in the middle. Gotch deposited Fawad Ahmed downtown to find some momentum. Marsh gave away five wides to pull the curtains down on the game. The Stars chased the target down with eight overs left.
