Australia certainly dominated New Zealand during the second innings of the Sydney Test. After, the impressive performance given by the bowlers in the first innings, the Aussie batsmen steered their side to prime position in winning the match on Day 4 and were well supported by their bowling unit. The hosts won the third Test by a big margin of 279 runs and successfully whitewashed Kiwis in the three-match Test series.
Australia continued with the same momentum in batting where they left on Day 3. David Warner (111 runs off 159 balls) and Joe Burns (40 runs off 79 balls) knitted a brilliant opening stand of 107 runs and the Kiwi bowlers had to wait for a long to get their first wicket in the second innings. In the end, Todd Astle, the off-spinner plumbed Burns out.
It was much relief for Blackcaps, who managed to break the dangerous partnership. But, on the other hand, Warner was in full flow with the bat as he played some mesmerizing strokes in the second innings and received the applauds from the spectators for the same. Also, the left-handed opener successfully scored his first ton of the year 2020.
Australia bowlers dismantle New Zealand batting line up in the second innings
The in-form top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne, came out to bat after Burn’s dismissal and joined the party with Warner. He played an efficient knock of 59 runs before he was dismissed by Matt Henry. He was the last batsman to get out as the Aussie skipper declared the innings just after the right-handed batsman’s dismissal and until then Australia had already taken a mammoth lead of 416 runs.
Coming onto the chase, New Zealand was already under the pressure of chasing down a mammoth total to avoid the whitewash in the ongoing series. They were already short of some of their main players. In the second innings, Aussie pace attack looked in the mood to finish the match on Day 4 and they managed to do so as their fast bowler Mitchell Starc dismissed Kiwi openers’ Tom Latham and Tom Blundell in his first two overs of the day.
After that, Blackcaps were left struggling at a score of 4 runs with a loss of two wickets. In the absence of Kane Williamson, the middle order yet again collapsed against the hosts’ bowlers as Ross Taylor scored 22 whereas Jeet Raval mustered only 12 in the second innings. The visitors’ nowhere looked close to avoid defeat in the Sydney Test as they played some silly strokes and gave their wickets in cheap to the bowlers.
It was Colin de Grandhomme, who played a determined knock of 52 runs but that was not enough to save the game for his side. In the end, New Zeland had to suffer their third consecutive defeat in the series by a big margin by 279 runs. For Australia, Nathan Lyon turned out to be the best bowler, who took his 18th five-wicket haul in Tests.
After the game, Marnus Labuschagne was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant batting display in both the innings of the final Test. He was also nominated as the Player of the series in the concluded series against New Zealand. Australia’s convincing win against Blackcaps helped them in grabbing some important points in the ongoing ICC Test Championship. And, now they are just 64 points behind the table-toppers India.

822 runs – that's how much Australia outscored New Zealand by in these three Test matches.
Then add the two innings victories against Pakistan and you've got one incredibly dominant home summer #AUSvNZ

Winning all the Tests at home is VERY important to make the Final of the World Test Championships. Good chance that Australia and India will be in the finals by the time they meet next year. Eng, Pak , SL and WI have all dropped Tests at home and SA might lose soon. #AUSvNZ

Thought Nathan Lyon might have taken the POTM honours, but Marnus more than a worth recipient.
Guess that answers the age-old question though.
