In the first day’s play in Chattogram, Asghar Afghan and Rahmat Shah stole the show. In the second, it was Rashid Khan’s turn to step up. The youngster put up an all-round show and has now put Afghanistan in a strong position in the one-off Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. At the close of play, the home team trails by 148 runs with two wickets left in the first innings.
Rashid Khan delivers with the bat
Asghar Afghan (92) was only 12 runs short of his maiden Test century, but he could only manage to add four runs to his overnight tally. Taijul Islam got rid of him when the batsman tried a wild slog across the line. Afsar Zazai (41) became Taijul’s fourth victim. From thereon, Rashid Khan (51) took charge and took the attack to the opposition. His knock was laced with two fours and three sixes.
The youngest ever Test skipper went on to accomplish his fifty at a run-a-ball and didn’t allow the Tigers’ bowlers to run through the tail. It was a sharp caught and bowled from Mehidy Hasan Miraz that led to his dismissal. Rashid guided the Afghans to a formidable score of 342 in their first innings. Shakib Al Hasan went wicketless on day one, but picked up Qais Ahmed and Yamin Ahmadzai.
Rashid Khan wreaks havoc with the ball
The hosts got off to a horrendous start as Ahmadzai nipped out Shadman Islam for a duck in the first over. Soumya Sarkar (17) and Liton Das (33) tried to put their heads down, but Mohammad Nabi, playing his final Test of his career, removed the former. A few overs later, Rashid came to the party, ripping Liton’s poles apart. The leg-spinner delivered the body blow, trapping Shakib plumb in front.
Mushfiqur Rahim perished for a duck to Rashid after which the tweaker removed Mahmudullah. Mominul Haque (52) fought hard, but threw his wicket away to Nabi. Qais Ahmed added to the wickets’ column, sending back Mehidy. However, Mosaddek Hossain (44*) showed guts and saw the Tigers through to the end of the day. Taijul (14*) didn’t give his wicket away and stayed unbeaten.
