Once again Bangladesh lost early wickets in their run chase, now versus Afghanistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. However, this time around, they were up against a stronger bowling unit. Following their three-wicket win versus Zimbabwe, the Tigers lost their second match by 25 runs. With the victory, Rashid Khan and his men moved to the top of the table.
Nabi comes to the party again
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors found themselves in some trouble. They were reduced to 19/3 with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Hazratullah Zazai and Najeeb Tarakai back in the hut. Najibullah Zadran couldn’t repeat his heroics from the other night and he fell prey to Mohammad Saifuddin. Taijul Islam got the better of Asghar Afghan, but replays showed that he overstepped.
Afghan went on to score 40 off 37 and was involved in a 79-run stand with Mohammad Nabi, who got stepped up in crisis yet again. Nabi stepped on the gas and brought up his fifty off 41 balls. In the next 13 balls, the veteran churned out 34 runs to end of 84 off 52. His knock was laced with three fours and seven sixes and it took Afghanistan to a competitive score of 164 for six in their 20 overs.
Regular wickets lead to Bangladesh’s demise
Surprisingly, the Tigers opened with Mushfiqur Rahim and the move backfired as Fareed Malik rattled his woodwork. Prior to that, Mujeeb Ur Rahman nipped out Liton Das. Shakib Al Hasan couldn’t get going and he became Mujeeb’s second victim. Soumya Sarkar couldn’t read a straighter one from Mujeeb and was struck in front. The onus was then on Mahmudullah and Sabbir Rahman.
Both took their time and got their 50-run stand off 43 balls. Sabbir was given LBW, but he used the DRS to good effect. Gulbadin Naib’s slower ball got rid of Mahmudullah, who got 44 off 39 with five fours. Afif Hossain got a promotion with the required rate above 10. Mujeeb can back and sent Sabbir back for 24. It also gave Mujeeb his first T20I four-fer and his best figures in the format.
It was again up to the duo of Afif and Mosaddek Hossain to take the team home. In the last five overs, the Tigers needed 69 runs with two overs of Rashid Khan remaining. The left-handed Afif hit the tweaker for a boundary to start with and perished after scoring 16. The rate reached 17 in the last three overs and it became too hefty a task for Bangladesh. Their innings ended on 139 all out.
