New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Tom Blundell helped their side in getting off to a good start on Day 2 in the first innings against Australia. It looked like that both the players have found their grooves and will look to play a responsible knock on Day 3 but that was not the case.
The Australian bowlers, who struggled on Day 2, certainly came with some astonishing performances and left the visitors struggling in the ongoing Test. Furthermore, the star for the day was Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon, who successfully managed to take his 17th five-wicket haul in Tests.
The hosts’ bowlers were in no mood to give even a single opportunity to the Kiwi batsmen. And, Lyon helped his side in getting the first breakthrough for the day as he bowled Tom Blundell out, who was fluently approaching towards his first Test fifty. Finally, after bowling 33 overs, Australia got their first wicket in the match.
Australia in position to win 3rd Test match against New Zealand
Later on, Tom Latham and Jeet Raval stitched a good partnership of 49 runs as the duo tried their level best to help their side in taking a lead in the match but they failed as both the players were dismissed in two consecutive overs. At one point, New Zealand were on a score of 116 at a loss of one wicket and that equation was brought down to 117 runs for 3 wickets. The dismissal of Latham and Raval certainly shifted the momentum of the match. Moreover, Ross Taylor failed to click a good knock with the bat, who got out after scoring just 22 runs.
In the lower middle-order, Glenn Phillips, who was called as the batting cover for ill Kane Williamson, tried and used the opportunity to the fullest and played the Aussie bowlers with elegance. He turned out to be the only player in Blackcaps batting line-up, who managed to score half-century as he mustered 52 runs before his gutsy knock came to a halt. Patt Cummins bowled a brilliant inswinging delivery blew the stumps from the grooves.
In the end, Nathan Lyon soon wiped off the Kiwi tail as he dismissed William Somerville and Neil Wagner in his an over followed by the wicket of Matt Henry in 30th over of the innings. Moreover, he ended up taking his 17th five-wicket haul in his international career and the Kiwis were dismissed on a score of 251.
The hosts preferred to bat instead of imposing follow-on and their opener David Warner (23) and Joe Burns (16) stitched a good partnership of 40 runs in 16 overs during the last session for the day. Australia has already taken a good lead of 243 runs and will look to convert it into a massive one. Also, the hosts’ have a big chance of winning the 3rd Test and whitewash New Zealand in the ongoing three-match Test series.

Test level since I've been alive, maybe 2nd to Warne. He has bowled a lot of overs on flat wickets not conducive to spin and had success. https://t.co/rvif26vbhS

Another very good bowling performance from the Aussies! It was led by their offie, Nathan Lyon, who bagged a fifer. The wicket was assisting the spinners, he was expected to do the job with the ball and has delivered. #AUSvNZ l #AUSvNZL
