Pakistan haven’t had much to cheer about in their ongoing Test series against Australia. Barring Babar Azam, the other batters have clearly strained to put up a fight. However, during the Day-Night Test at the Adelaide Oval, one man, from whom runs were least expected, came to the party and it’s Yasir Shah, who went on to smash his maiden first-class ton after his debut in the 2001-02 season.
He came to bat when Pakistan were tottering with the score at 89 for the loss of six wickets in 31.5 overs. The lower-order batsman had to weather the storm of Mitchell Starc, who had picked up four wickets by then. But Yasir didn’t succumb to the situation and played out the rest of the overs on Day one. Shah had the guidance of Babar Azam, at the other end, who stayed unbeaten on 43.
The duo carried on with the good work in the second day as well. The stitched together a stand of 105 runs to take Pakistan out of the embarrassing position. Shah is no mug with the bat and he showed it, scoring his half-century off 129 balls. Prior to the Adelaide Test, he had seven first-class fifties to his name and even on the Australia tour, he has displayed a great amount of determination.
Shah soars above expectations
In the first ball of the 66th over, Shah lost Babar as his partner. Babar looked good for his third Test ton, but fell prey to Mitchell Starc on 97. The very next delivery from Starc saw Shaheen Shah Afridi perish for a golden duck. However, it didn’t ruffle Yasir by any stretch of the imagination. He also got apt support from Mohammad Abbas, who was in no mood to let the mighty Aussies dictate terms.
Shah got into 90s after which he became a little cautious, realizing the milestone he was nearing. He played quite a few dot balls and the moment came in the 86th over from Josh Hazlewood. In the fifth ball, he cleared mid-on by the slimmest of margins to get to a century off 192 deliveries. After his masterclass, Twitter was pleasantly surprised and the users praised him for the wonderful knock.
Here is how Twitter praised Yasir Shah for the resilience:-
