The 2019 Ashes got underway with an exciting day’s play at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. After Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, the England bowlers, especially Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes made life difficult for the Aussie batters. Cameron Bancroft and David Warner, who made their Test comebacks following the tampering saga, got out cheaply as well.
However, Steve Smith held one end up and showed a tremendous level of calmness in the middle. He weathered the storm early in his knock and saw wickets going down like ninepins from the other end. At 122/8 in the 44th over, the Aussies were well and truly staring down the barrel. Smith didn’t drop the gun and put on a useful partnership of 88 runs along with Peter Siddle.
Steve Smith stands tall amidst the storm
After Moeen Ali got rid of Siddle for 44, Smith continued the good work with Nathan Lyon. The tenth-wicket stand fetched 74 runs for the visiting team. Most importantly, Smith accomplished his 24th ton in the format. He ended up scoring 144 runs off 219 balls with 16 fours and two sixes. For the Three Lions, Broad was the most successful with a five-wicket haul.
Woakes finished with three scalps. In the meantime, Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer criticised the quality of cricket in the Ashes. Though he praised the marketing and packaging of the high-voltage series, he believed that since 2005, the Ashes hasn’t been exciting.
The current commentator took to Twitter and wrote, “Good marketing. Nice packaging. How about the cricket??? Which was the last #Ashes you remember for the quality of the cricket played over five tests? I’ll have to go back to 2005,”

In another message, he conducted a poll on social media where he asked people whether the Ashes is overrated or not. He captioned the poll and wrote, “Do you feel that #TheAshes is the most overrated series in modern times?

Meanwhile, the fans aren’t happy with Chopra by any stretch of the imagination. The netizens slammed him for criticising the quality of cricket in the high-voltage clash between the arch-rivals.
Here is how Twitterati lashed out at Aakash Chopra
India-Pakistan is the most overrated. What tf makes you feel ashes is overrated?

It is with great sadness and disappointment that I'm unfollowing you today. We had a good run, something like 5 years were I ignored your stupid remarks & enjoyed the remarkable ones. So long Akash. Took me long enough to realise you are overrated as a cricket pundit. #Ashes2019

As opposed to India who play every second test against Bangladesh? Shut up.

You are a overrated commentator

Disappointed by your tweet #AakashChopra 😒.
It's ignorant and unnecessary.
The Ashes is the best series in Test Cricket.

Feel free to not watch!

This is usually the type of tweet made by a random Twitter spud not a former test cricketer and current analyst.

That moment when you're getting jealous of these higher standard series while your team is playing against minnows lol
