India and Australia locked horns against each other in the third and final T20 International at Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday. During the match, Indian skipper Virat Kohli got involved in a heated interaction with the umpires after the Men in Blue were denied a review as umpires felt that he was late in signalling for DRS.

Losing the toss, Aaron Finch & Co. were sent to bat first. Australia had a torrid start as their skipper bagged a duck and went back to the pavilion in the second over on the delivery by Washington Sundar. This was followed by Steve Smith and Matthew Wade stitching a crucial 65-run stand for the second wicket. However, Sundar returned again in the 10th over to pick the wicket of Smith.

India had a chance of making a comeback in the game and T Natarajan had almost provided that opportunity by trapping the in-form batsman Wade in front of the stumps. On the fourth ball of the 11th over, Matthew was playing at 51 runs off 36 deliveries when Natarajan bowled a seam delivery and the left-hander tried to flick it. But the ball pitched on the middle and leg.

Matthew Wade gets a lifeline as umpires deny India a review

Indian left-arm quick appealed for LBW but the umpire didn’t look interested. The time for the DRS didn’t show up on the screen and Kohli took his time to consult the wicketkeeper KL Rahul and bowler before finally signalling the DRS.

Virat Kohli was standing at the boundary and had no idea about the ball, so he took a long time to decide on whether to use the review or not. Meanwhile, a replay was shown on the big screen from which the Indian skipper realised that it was a close call and decided to go for DRS. However, the third umpire deemed the review appeal from India ‘null and void’ as it came after seeing the replay.

Virat wasn’t happy with this decision as he stormed to on-field umpires to have a discussion regarding the same. Nonetheless, umpires made him understand that one can’t take the review after seeing the replay on the big screen. Thus, Wade got a lifeline as he was clearly out if India had gone for a DRS a little earlier.

Australia went on to post a total of 186 runs on the board in their 20 overs as Wade smashed 80 off 53 while Glenn Maxwell added 54 runs to the scoreboard.

The referral against Wade raises an interesting question. If the big screen shows the replay within the time allotted for the referral, can you disallow the referral? In this case we need to see the timer but the question is valid
