Virat Kohli, the current Indian skipper has come out saying that Team India’s low ranking in T20Is is not a matter of concern because according to him, they are yet to field their strongest team in the shorter format. Kohli also revealed that his side is just preparing on how to defend low totals in T20Is ahead of the marquee event that is scheduled to be played next year in Australia.
Currently, India is gearing up for the T20I series opener against West Indies that will be played in Hyderabad on December 6. Virat Kohli and Co have given significant results in Tests and ODIs. But, when it comes to the shorter format, they have not been up to the mark. India are currently ranked 5th in the latest ICC T20I rankings.
Virat Kohli highlights the preparations for T20 World Cup 2020
On Thursday in the pre-match conference ahead of the 1st T20I, Virat Kohli said that they have been a decent side when it comes to chasing but their inability to defend totals is something on which they are currently focusing on. He feels that ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, he along with the team management wants to give ample number of opportunities to young talent that will help them to pick a strong squad for the showpiece event.
“We need to focus on batting first and defending low totals as well. Those are two things that we need to really focus on. T20 is a format where you can experiment a lot more than ODIs and Tests. You want to give chances to the youngsters in the shortest format, we have not played the strongest eleven together in T20Is so rankings cannot be considered. We have the mindset that we will not focus on the rankings,” Kohli said in the pre-match conference as quoted by NDTV Sports.
Kohli also stated that they are currently not focussing on the rankings but from now onwards they will field their strongest side as part of their build-up going into the T20 World Cup next year. “Now heading into the T20 World Cup, we need to take our best team to the field, we would probably be playing our strongest eleven going into the World Cup,” he added.
