The camaraderie between the Indian captain Virat Kohli and former captain MS Dhoni is well known to everyone. Kohli has constantly backed the latter in the last couple of years and the duo has finished a lot of matches for India together. And one of them was the memorable win over Australia in a must-win encounter during the World T20 (now T20 World Cup) in 2016 in Mohali.
The Steve Smith-led side had posted 160 runs for the loss of six wickets after opting to bat first. It was certainly an uphill task for the hosts to gun down the target in a bid to stay alive. The chase didn’t start according to the plan for India as both the openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan couldn’t make up for the dot balls played.
They were left reeling at 49/3 in the 8th over and at 94/4 after 14 overs, the task looked near impossible for India. Virat Kohli, in the meantime, was settled and needed a proper partner at the other end. This is where MS Dhoni entered and the rest is history.
Kohli’s special night
The required run-rate was over 11 when MS Dhoni entered and the duo made the mockery of the chase. And they didn’t hit a lot of fours and sixes but ran like anything converting ones into twos putting pressure on the opposition. When the time came though, they pulled the trigger and eked crucial boundaries and finished the game with five balls to spare.
Kohli remained unbeaten on 82 off just 51 balls and it is still regarded as one of the best T20 knocks for the way he ran along with his the then skipper. Dhoni churned out as important 18 runs off just 10 deliveries as India scripted a memorable win.
No wonder, Virat Kohli still remembers the night fondly and took to Twitter on Thursday to recall the winning moment while also cheekily reminding MS Dhoni of he made the 30-year-old run in an important game. “A game I can never forget. Special night. This man, made me run like in a fitness test @msdhoni,” Kohli’s tweet read. However, the fans are still pondering what prompted Virat Kohli to suddenly tweet about this match and MS Dhoni.
Here’s his tweet:
