The latest season of the Indian Premier League is right here, and cricket pundits have begun talking over some regular topics of the league. Despite having a star-studded line-up, the Royal Challengers Bangalore haven’t been able to see the face of the IPL title even once. Former RCB coach Ray Jennings recently opened that the skipper Virat Kohli stood in favour of some wrong players. This was the reason, his ideology didn’t match with him at all.
Jennings plied his trade as an RCB coach from 2009-2014, and he had some set plans for certain players, but again Kohli never approved them. Jennings is named as franchise’s most successful coach so far and guided the team into the finale of IPL twice in the years 2009 and 2011. Sometimes, even Kohli was alone while driving the team into a respectable slot, he added.
“If I have to look back then I would say that in IPL there used to be 25-30 players (in the squad) and it was the coach’s duty to look after all the players. Sometimes he was a bit of a loner in the team. Sometimes, he backed the wrong players. But, you can’t blame him for that. I wanted certain players to bowl or bat in certain conditions/situations, but he had different ideas,” Jennings told Cricket.com.
You needed somebody around Virat to guide him: Ray Jennings
Furthermore, Jennings alleged that he had separated some players to play in a particular slot, but they never got a chance to play under Kohli, who acquired the position of RCB’s full-time skipper in 2013. Having said that, the former coach believes that they have an amazing cricketing brain, who will soon lead the franchise to see their maiden IPL title.
“You needed somebody around Virat to guide him (at that point in time). Of course, he and I bumped a few times, but he is a good guy and a very quick learner. Nice to see him grow as a player and now as a captain. His mannerism is great. His best is yet to come,” Jennings concluded.
RCB is all set to pick up their pace in the current edition of IPL from September 21st where they are slated to lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
