The cricketing world took a plunge in nostalgia when the past greats of a number of countries participated in the Road Safety World Series which is currently underway in Mumbai and Pune. However, for the legends, even fielding for full 20 overs is not easy in the post-retirement life and former India opener Virender Sehwag’s recent words made it evident.
The 41-year-old former Indian opener told jokingly during the India Legends’ second game against Sri Lanka Legends that captain Sachin Tendulkar’s decision to field first after winning the toss is leaving a toll on their bodies since they have to run around for full 20 overs.
Sehwag’s batting show in the first match against the West Indies Legends on Saturday, however, spoke little about his tiredness. The former dashing opener (74* off 57 balls) added 83 runs for the first wicket with Tendulkar (36 off 29) in less than 11 overs at the Wankhede Stadium after the Caribbeans put up 150 for 8 in 20 overs.
Three Indian bowlers, including Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, and Pragyan Ojha took two wickets each after Tendulkar won the toss and sent Brian Lara’s team to bat first. India Legends won the match with seven wickets and 10 balls to spare. Sehwag was picked as the player of the match.
India win toss against Sri Lanka and bowl too; Virender Sehwag disappointed
On Tuesday, Tendulkar won the toss again and decided to bowl, yet again, against Sri Lanka Legends at DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. “We are getting sore while fielding and Sachin elected to bowl first and makes us field 20 overs, tires us before batting,” Sehwag told on live to Colors Cineplex after the India Legends captain elected to bowl against the Sri Lankans.
The islanders’ legends were given a good start by their captain Tillakaratne Dilshan and Romesh Kaluwitharana. Both India and Sri Lanka Legends have won a game apiece from as many games and whoever wins on Tuesday will top the points table. Australia Legends lost their first match against the Sri Lankans by seven runs on Sunday while South Africa and West Indies Legends will lock horns in Mumbai on Wednesday.
