The visiting Indian side scripted history at The Gabba, beating Australia in their fortress for the first time in more than three decades. In a resolute performance that can be labelled as one of India’s best in Test cricket, the visitors chased down a near improbable target of 328 runs on a fifth-day wicket that was not easy to bat on, and against a bowling attack consisting of the likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.
The likes of Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Rishabh Pant stepped up in the second innings in Brisbane, to allow India to win the fourth Test and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And, Washington Sundar’s Test career could not have started in a better manner.
Not only did the 21-year-old Tamil Nadu spinner pick up three wickets in the first innings, he also scored a vital 62 in the first innings with the bat as he and Shardul Thakur launched an assault on the Australian bowlers. Sundar said that Rishabh Pant hitting the winning runs was the best feeling he has ever experienced in his entire life.
Sundar added that he had played a lot with Pant since his U19 days, and added that Pant played ‘superbly’ and helped the visitors take control of the proceedings. The off-spinner further revealed that walking at The Gabba with the Indian flag is an indescribable feeling.
“Rishabh and I have played a lot of cricket since our under 19 days and that helped a lot. He was batting superbly and that helped us take control. When I went in we still needed 50. I knew if we got 25-30 runs they will feel the pressure and we could win. That’s exactly what we did. When Rishabh hit the winning four it was just the best feeling of my life: and when I was walking with the Indian flag at the Gabba it is a feeling I can’t express in words,” said Sundar in a chat with Sports Today.
Sundar throws light on how he is getting pampered by his mother
Sundar also added that since his return from the land of the kangaroos, he has been pampered by his mother and has even stated that he had chicken biryani a couple of days ago. Sundar further said that he is getting ready to prepare himself for the grueling Test series against England that starts next month.
“I had chicken biriyani two days back and my mother is pampering me a lot. But in a couple of days I am so much looking to join the team again and get ready for the England series,” said Sundar.
The off-spinner also said that skipper Ajinkya Rahane was ‘superb’, senior batsman Rohit Sharma helped the youngsters and the motivational coach Ravi Shastri provided confidence to the players. He also termed the dressing room as ‘fantastic’ and added that all the players were given the freedom to express themselves.
“Ravi bhai has always given us confidence and the way Ajinkya captained was superb. Rohit has always helped us all the youngsters and the dressing room was fantastic, all of us were allowed to express ourselves,” concluded Sundar.
