India’s young spin all-rounder Washington Sundar impressed big time during the just-concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and made a case for himself for a permanent spot in India’s Test Playing XI. Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the last Test against Australia after he sustained an injury during the third Test at Sydney Cricket Ground.
This resulted in Washington to make his place in the squad, who had performed exceedingly well in the three-match T20I series against Australia, earning his maiden cap for India in the purest format of the game. The all-rounder had a dream debut at The Gabba in Brisbane as he scalped four wickets across two innings along with playing a match-defining knock of 62 runs in India’s first batting innings to help the visitors save the match.
After his heroics in Brisbane and winning the prestigious Border Gavaskar Trophy by 2-1, the all-rounder along with Men in Blue returned back to India and is now spending some quality time with his family before joining the Indian contingent again for the four-match Test series against England, starting from February 5 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The 21-year-old Sundar also got a chance to meet the music maestro AR Rahman and exchange a couple of words with him. The spinner took to his official Twitter handle to share a few pictures featuring him and AR Rahman. “To a blissful evening,” Sundar wrote while sharing the photos.

Washington Sundar opines on India’s historic win at The Gabba
Apart from playing a sublime knock in the second innings of the last Test, The Tamil Nadu spinner had also stitched a wonderful partnership with Rishabh Pant in the fourth innings by adding 22 runs to the scoreboard and helping India inch closer to the total. Speaking about the winning moment, Sundar had recently revealed that he can’t express in words what the Test series win meant to him.
“Rishabh and I have played a lot of cricket since our under 19 days and that helped a lot. I knew if we got 25-30 runs they would feel the pressure and we could win. That’s exactly what we did. When Rishabh hit the winning four it was just the best feeling of my life: and when I was walking with the Indian flag at the Gabba it is a feeling I can’t express in words,” Washington Sundar had said.
