India made an incredible comeback in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beating Australia by eight wickets in the Boxing Day Test match at the MCG. The visiting team was under tremendous pressure after they lost the Day-Night Adelaide Test. In the opening Test, India were bowled out for a mere 36 runs in their second innings with Mohammed Shami unable to bat.
But in the Boxing Day Test, India came out firing on all cylinders and won by eight wickets. To start with India lost the toss and were put in to field first. However, from there on, there was no looking backwards for Ajinkya Rahane’s men. To start with, Australia were bowled out for 195 in the first innings. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer with four wickets to his name.
India draw the equaliser
In their first innings, India scored 326 runs courtesy of Rahane’s 112 and Ravindra Jadeja’s 57. Most importantly, they garnered a lead of 131 runs. In their second innings, the Aussies could only manage 200 runs. Matthew Wade and Cameron Green scored in the 40s, but none could manage to carry on and convert. Mohammed Siraj impressed with three wickets to show for his efforts.
Chasing 70 runs, India lost the early wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara. But Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane made sure that India get over the line without more damage. Gill looked fluent as he smashed seven fours and scored 35 runs off 36 balls. Rahane backed up his ton with another gritty knock of 27 runs off 40 balls with three fours.
Before the series started, Michael Vaughan, the retired England batsman, predicted that India would lose the series 4-0. After the defeat in the Adelaide Test, Vaughan sounded even more confident about his prediction.
Vaughan had taken to Twitter and written, “Told ya … India are going to get hammered in the Test Series … #AUSvIND #4-0.”

In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer trolled Vaughan after the latter’s prediction went wrong. Jaffer posted a meme, involving Nawazuddin Siddiqui, to troll the former England captain.
