New Year 2021 began for the Indian team with controversy as five Indian players including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Navdeep Saini and Prithvi Shaw have been accused of breaching the bio-bubble in Melbourne ahead of the third Test in Sydney of the ongoing four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
The players were strictly informed that they were allowed to dine at a restaurant but in an outdoor one only. However, in a video that went viral on social media on January 1, all five players can be seen enjoying their meal at an indoor restaurant. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Australia (CA) have launched an inquiry in this matter and all the five players have already been asked to isolate themselves from the main squad.
Though the players are allowed to train separately from the main squad till the investigation in the matter is completed, their participation in the Third Test, which is scheduled to take place from January 7 at Sydney Cricket Ground, is in doubt. It is reported that the five players have gotten permission to travel with the Indian squad from Melbourne to Sydney on Monday.
Matthew Wade opines of the whole bio-bubble breach controversy
Australia’s opening batsman Matthew Wade also opined on the issue stating that though he has seen the photo, he hasn’t thought much about it as it is not the Australian team’s concern on what Indian players do outside the cricket ground. The opening batsman also believes that not much can be done about this whole episode that the authorities are trying to sort the whole matter at a higher level.
“What India is doing, I haven’t really thought too much about it, I have seen the photo, it is what it is, people a lot higher than me are sorting it out, as a group and me personally, we are not worried what India is doing outside of the cricket ground, we cannot do much about it,” Wade said during a virtual presser.
In addition, a controversy has also erupted on the venue of the fourth Test. After Sydney, both Australia and India have to travel to Brisbane to participate in the fourth match but the visiting nation is hesitant in traveling to Brisbane owing to their strict quarantine rules.
