David Warner and Aaron Finch didn’t die wondering in Australia’s opening ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After India asked the Aussies to track down 256 on a decent batting strip, the visitors stormed to a 10-wicket victory. In the powerplay, the duo churned out 84 runs after which they kept creaming the Indian bowling with sheer ease and remained unscathed.
The pair did well to such an extent that talks of them opening the batting in the 2023 World Cup have started doing the rounds. On being asked about the same, Warner hilariously said that they need to consult their wives before making a decision. On a serious note, the southpaw is focussed on performing well in the second ODI at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot.
“We’ll speak to our wives first. We’ll both be 36 or 37. I’ve got three kids and I hope that’s the last one. We’ll take one step at a time. We’ll look at the next game in Rajkot. We actually spoke about this in the team meeting not looking too far ahead,” Warner was quoted as saying in a video clip uploaded by Cricket Australia (CA).

We know each other’s games and personalities: David Warner
Warner and Finch have been opening the batting since 2014. In 59 matches thus far, the duo has amassed a significant 3050 runs at an average of 52.58. The pair has racked up nine century and 13 half-century stands with their highest being the 258* in Mumbai.
On sharing the crease with Finch, Warner stated that they understand each other’s style of play. Moreover, he said that they have frequent conversations and share a healthy camaraderie off the field as well.
“We complement each other on the field and we’re great mates off the field as well. We know each other’s games and personalities well. We have honest conversations. If we’re playing shots that we wouldn’t, we reassure each other about that,” Warner added.
Warner and Finch opened the batting in the 2019 World Cup where Australia progressed to the semis. The openers were two of their leading run-scorers of the tournament. Even as Warner finished with 647 runs with three tons and as many fifties, Finch had 507 runs to his name with a couple of hundreds and three fifties.
