After pulling off an iconic run-chase against Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals’ Rahul Tewatia became an overnight star. The Haryana leggie turned the tide in his side’s favour by smashing five maximums off Sheldon Cottrell in the 18th over. Silencing his doubters, Tewatia undeniably was the star of the night. Along with eclipsing Mayank Agarwal’s stellar ton, 27-year-old Tewatia even overshadowed Sanju Samson’s carnage at Sharjah.
Tewatia put on an exhibition of power-hitting after starting off at a snail’s pace. Bashed for his sluggish knock, he was 17 off 23 before decimating Cottrell in the 18th over of the match. Weaving his memorable knock around seven sixes, Tewatia notched up his maiden IPL fifty before getting dismissed for 53 off 31.
Ricky Ponting was debriefing DC’s victory at Wankhede
After Tewatia’ impressive show, a last year’s video of him has come into the limelight. Head coach Ricky Ponting, after defeating Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019, is seen giving a speech while debriefing the game. Ponting debuted at the start of the 2019 and DC began with a huge win over MI at Wankhede. Post the comprehensive victory, Ponting, in the dressing room, applauded multiple players for being a vital element of their triumph.
Southpaw Rishabh Pant had scored a thunderous 78 off 27 that night, but Ponting commended Colin Ingram for his 47 off 32, Shikhar Dhawan for his 43, and Ishant Sharma, Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada for their bowling effort.
Ponting further said he didn’t care that Axar Patel went for 42 in his three overs because the conditions were unfavourable for spinners. Finishing off by labelling Capitals a ‘f**ken good’ team, Ponting began to walk off. On his way out, the former Aussie skipper was stopped by Tewatia.
The conversation between the two wasn’t audible but Ponting, after their exchange of words, turned around and said– “Boys, Tewatia took four catches, and wants a pat on the back.” The room burst in laughter before the head coach ultimately made his way out. Axar Patel immediately walked to Tewatia to mock him by saying, “Who begs for recognition, bro?” Tewatia responded with– “Bro, you have to fight for what you are owed.”
