The future of Indian cricket is in safe hands now and thanks to Sourav Ganguly’s entry as BCCI President who is going to sprinkle stardust all over the place. The former captain who once tasted as to what it feels like to be under actual pressure has been officially appointed as 39th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai on Wednesday at its Annual General Meeting.
Sourav Ganguly’s ultimate presence maybe for a short stint as he will hold this post for around nine months but he is all geared up to make an instant impact by taking the Indian cricket forward with corruption-free. Ganguly’s aura would make the Indian cricketers feel much comfortable. The drama is going to unfold thereafter and the Men in Blue will approach the games with a fresh perspective.
Why only 9 months?
Ganguly who has already kick-started his duty on 23rd of October will have to voluntarily leave the office by the end of July 2020. This is according to the clause in the new BCCI constitution which makes the ‘Cooling-Off’ period compulsory after six years in office.
Digging in detail about his previous engagements, Sourav Ganguly has been holding posts in the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for the past 5 years where he currently serves as president. According to the new rules, an administrator can only ply his trade for six years at a trot. In the wake of this period, ‘Cooling-Off’ period conditions come into effect. Ganguly won’t be able to take office for three years once the cooling-off period starts.
What are the other appointments made?
It should be noted that Ganguly’s recruitment has put an end to the 33-month reign of the Supreme Court-appointed CoA. It is cognizance of the fact that Sourav Ganguly was the unanimous nomination for the BCCI President post along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah as the BCCI Secretary.
Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President and current Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur’s younger brother Arun Dhumal has been appointed the Treasurer while Jayesh George from Kerala is the Joint Secretary.
