The 2019-20 edition of the Women’s U23 T20 League will take place between November 12 and December 05. The tournament will be played in a round-robin and playoff format and a total of 142 matches will be played at an Inter-state level among 37 teams. And so with the tournament set to take centre stage in the second week of November, selection trials are being conducted.
But in a recent turn of rather unfortunate events, three Women’s team selectors from Bengal met with an accident on Sunday (November 03) when they were travelling for a selection trial for the Under-23 outfit. The troika of women U23 selectors have been admitted at a local hospital and are out of danger now.
According to a report published in the Hindustan Times, sources in the know of the events reckoned that the three selectors- Chandan, Purnima, and Shyama, were going to Suri in Birbhum district of West Bengal in a bid to attend the selection trial for the 2019-20 edition of the Women’s U23 Twenty20 Trophy, when their car met with an unfortunate accident in Shaktigarh area.
Edulji thanks Cricket Association of Bengal for taking a prompt action
An official of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying that all the three selectors are out of danger. “All three are in hospital but are out of danger,” CAB official said. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer and the member of the Committee of Administrator (CoA) Diana Edulji expressed his gratitude towards the Cricket Association of Bengal for taking prompt action.
“I had a word with BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and he said the CAB is looking into it to ensure that the selectors are taken good care of. The prompt action from the association was a must,” Diana Eduji said. Meanwhile, Bengal’s opening encounter in the U23 T20 League will be against Odhisa on November 12.
Speaking of Eduji, the former Indian women cricketer has been in the news recently for her war or words with Farokh Engineer who had called the COA’s 33-month tenure as a ‘waste of time’, saying that the three-member panel had no idea about the game even though Diana had played “little cricket”. Edulji replied to Engineer, saying that he should have thought a bit before making such a “foolish statement”.
“He is an old friend. For someone whom I have known for years, I am surprised that his knowledge of cricket is so poor. I wish he had thought a bit before making such a foolish statement. I don’t want to say further because I respect his cricket and he should respect the cricket that I have played,” Edulji said as quoted by Sportstar.
