The Indian team’s ICC World Cup 2019 ended up with a loss to New Zealand in the semi-finals and the Virat Kohli’s side missed a great opportunity to lift their third title. Kohli might have impressed his fans and many cricket experts in his first outing in such event as captain, but it seems the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) have some questions for him and coach Ravi Shastri.
Shastri’s tenure as head coach of the team was extended for a period of 45 days and the team is expected to board the flight back to Mumbai on Sunday, July 14. Since they failed to chase down the target of 240 runs against the Black Caps in Manchester, losing their first three wickets for just five runs and slumped to 92/6, before Ravindra Jadeja (77) and MS Dhoni (50) added over 100 runs to resurrect the chase.
Many issues to be discussed
There are many issues to be discussed with the captain, coach and even the selectors when the CoA announces a date for the meeting which might see them make a roadmap for the upcoming World T20 in Australia in 2020. “We will certainly have a review meeting once the coach and the captain are back from their breaks. I will not put a date and time but we will speak to them. Also we will speak to selection committee head on road ahead,” Vinod Rai was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The CoA chief couldn’t reveal more details about the meeting, but it has been learnt that there are three major questions to be put forth for the captain, coach and head of selectors when they meet to review the performances and the topmost will be how Ambati Rayudu was handled by the selectors.
He was dumped in favour of Vijay Shankar despite being the first-choice batsman at no.4 for more than a year and nonperformance in one series just before the IPL and World Cup ended his chances. The selection of Dinesh Karthik might also be on the agenda, given his form in IPL and ODI cricket in the matches prior to World Cup.
With Dhoni and then Pant, India played three wicket-keepers in the playing XI in a couple of matches in the tournament. And the most important question to be asked to Kohli and Shastri might be why MS Dhoni was not sent in when India was 5/3 and 24/4 against the Kiwis in the semi-final. It has come to light that assistant coach Sanjay Bangar made the decision and Shastri will be asked to give his views on the same.
