England’s fine win over Australia in the semifinal of the World Cup was a bit soured for Jason Roy after he was fined for breaching Level One of the ICC Code of Conduct. The England star top-scored for his side but ended up getting into an altercation with the on-field umpire after being dismissed. Roy lost his cool when umpire Kumar Dharmasena ruled him out after Australia appealed for a caught behind.
Dharmasena was a bit late to give his decision, leaving Roy angry. The replays showed that there was clear daylight between bat and ball. However, since Jonny Bairstow had already used up the review unsuccessfully, Roy could not. The right-handed batsman gestured for review only to be reminded by the square leg umpire that he could not. In the meantime, Roy had a few things to say while gesturing towards Dharmasena.
After the game, Roy was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. He was fined 30% of the match fee. Roy admitted his offence and thus there would be no hearing taking place. In addition to the fine, two demerit points have also been added to his disciplinary record.
England thrash Australia:
Talking about the game, England thrashed Australia by eight wickets to storm into the final of the World Cup. Unlike the first semifinal between India and New Zealand, this one turned out to be a lopsided contest with the hosts dominating the game thoroughly. This will be England’s fourth World Cup final and the first one since 1992. The hosts are yet to win the World Cup and will take on New Zealand in the final.
Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer gave England a solid start with the ball to reduce Australia to 14 for 3. Steve Smith then scored a fighting 85 to take his side to a respectable 223. But the score turned out to be too less in the end as England chased it down inside 33 overs by losing just a couple of wickets. Roy was the top-scorer for the side, blasting 85.
