India are all set to start their journey in the ICC World Test Championship. Virat Kohli and Co are scheduled to lock horns with the Windies in a two-match series and the opening game is scheduled to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound in Antigua. During the encounter, the players of the national team will wear jerseys with numbers and names on their back.
The numbers also have the Test Championship logo on it. A photoshoot took place on Tuesday where the Indian cricketers flaunted their names and numbers. Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper is very excited for the games. He feels there will be a purpose to every match from now. The Indian skipper is someone, who has always spoken in favour of the most traditional form of cricket.
Now the other Indian cricketers have also opined on the new-look jersey. Cheteshwar Pujara, India’s batting stalwart, reckons that it’s easier to identify the players with the new jersey. He understands the significance of the same as he has played quite a few seasons of County Cricket in England. As per off-spinner Ravi Ashwin, the new jerseys will ensure engagement with the supporters.
Ashwin said that since the changes are at the back, it shouldn’t be a hassle for any of the cricketers. He wishes for getting the young fans into the oldest format of the game. Ajinkya Rahane, who played for Hampshire recently, said that it’s a special feeling and it’s also a step to recognize Test cricket. The likes of KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah also sounded delighted over donning the jersey.
World Test Championship already underway
The WTC started with the first Ashes Test between England and Australia at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Aussies won the game comprehensively by a margin of 251 runs. Steve Smith scored a couple of gutsy centuries to help his team take an important 1-0 lead in the series.
Sri Lanka and New Zealand also played a WTC game at the Galle International Stadium, wearing the numbered jersey. The hosts won that game by six wickets after skipper Dimuth Karunaratne scored a masterful century in the fourth innings of the encounter.
