Team India has predominantly been a batting-oriented unit. However, over the past few years, the Men in Blue have witnessed substantial growth in the quality of their pacers. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have given skipper Virat Kohli the firepower to succeed in all conditions.
The fast bowling force has played a key role in India’s overseas expeditions, where a team needs to scalp regular wickets to put the hosts under pressure. India’s seam bowling unit has played a vital role in the team’s success in countries like South Africa, Australia and England.
West Indies, back in the day, were regarded as the most lethal pace unit in international cricket. The era was undoubtedly a golden one for the Caribbean side as they had the likes of Curtley Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Joel Garner.
Ian Bishop lauds India’s fast bowling force
Ian Bishop, who briefly was also a part of the dominant West Indies bowling force, said that Indian cricket is witnessing a new age when it comes to fast bowling. According to Bishop, a team can’t rely on spinners, especially in overseas conditions.
“India are at the forefront, the vanguard, of this fast bowling renaissance because they obviously recognised this years ago,” Ian Bishop said on Sony Ten’s Pit Stop show.
“If you want to be the number one team in the world, you cannot rely on your spinners all the time because when you travel to western countries, spin is apparently only a certain stage of the game, you have to have fast bowling and India have found that,” he added.
Bishop, who donned the West Indies jersey in 43 Tests and 84 ODIs, also pointed out Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and said that one can’t expect the speedster to last if he plays every game across all formats. A player’s body gradually wears out if his workload isn’t managed efficiently in international cricket.
“Jasprit is one of a small group of bowlers who transcend the various formats of the game. But you can’t expect him to last if he is playing every game in every format. The human body cannot do that. You have to manage these precious resources because he is a generational talent,” claimed 52-year-old Bishop.
