Former England skipper Michael Vaughan recently took a sly dig at Team India after the conclusion of their first Test against England at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. England stunned their fancied hosts by 227 runs to take the lead in the four-match series. The visitors thoroughly dominated India to register their big win.
The defeat was India’s first at home since 2017 and just the second one since 2012. Right from the toss till the end of the game, almost everything fell in place for England. Batting first, the tourists piled up a mammoth total of 578. Skipper Joe Root, who was playing his 100th Test, led from the front and scored a stunning double century.
The bowlers then helped England take a massive lead of 241 runs by bowling out India for just 337. In the second innings, the Root-led side managed to score only 178 but the huge lead in the first innings helped them post a target of 420. In reply, India’s batsmen fell like a pack of cards on the final day pitch as the home side was bundled for just 192.
Michael Vaughan trolled for distasteful tweet
Just hours after the Test ended, Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to take a dig at Team India by posting a distasteful tweet. The former cricketer-turned-commentator questioned India for not giving any signed shirt to Root to acknowledge his 100th Test match. While giving a signed shirt to an opposition player on his 100th Test is not a rule, Vaughan did it because India had gifted Australia spinner Nathan Lyon a signed shirt for the same reason just a few days ago.
Following the fourth Test at the Gabba, India had won hearts by giving a signed shirt to the Australian. Later, Lyon had taken to Instagram to praise Team India’s gesture. Referring to the same, Vaughan took to Twitter and wrote why Root wasn’t presented with a signed shirt. The outspoken former cricketer asserted that India didn’t do any such gesture due to the defeat in Chennai.
“India gifted @NathLyon421 a signed shirt for his 100th Test at the end of the Gabba Win … Did @root66 receive one today after the loss?? Not sure if it happened? Can anyone confirm?” wrote Michael Vaughan.
Not unsurprisingly, his tweet did not go down well with some Indian fans and they did not waste any time in trolling him. Some of the fans even said that India were so generous that they gifted Root a double-century and a Test win. At the same time, one fan also asked Vaughan not to beg for the jersey.
Here are some of the reactions:
