South Africa were out-batted, out-bowled, out-fielded and out-thought in almost facet of the game as England completed a stunning 3-1 heist in what eventually turned out to be a brutally one-sided series. The final nail in the coffin was hammered in the Johannesburg where England inflicted a 191-run hammering on the deflated Faf du Plessis-led South Africans.
Faf du Plessis is under the scanner both as a batsman but more so as a leader after having presided over eight defeats in the past nine Test matches. It includes a home series defeat to Sri Lanka [0-2] and England [1-3] and a 0-3 rout in India last October.
And, the only questions that South Africa need an answer of: will Faf du Plessis relinquish the leadership duties? But Du Plessis, who has already been stripped off the captaincy duties in white-ball cricket, does not want to take any decision in such emotional times.
“It feels like you’ve been pushing me that way in the last while. You don’t make decisions like that when you are emotional or disappointed. I know the results don’t look good. It shows you where we are in terms of confidence. It’s time off to get away from cricket and from all the noise, freshen up and then come back for the T20s.” Faf du Plessis said as quoted by Cricbuzz in the post-match conference.
Du Plessis clears the air around his controversial shoulder barging with Jos Buttler
Du Plessis, who had earlier said the Johannesburg Test will be his last on home soil, is now looking ahead to the T20I series against England. There, he he will once again lock horns with Jos Buttler, whose shoulder he had crashed into on his way to telling Stuart Broad of what he thought about him.
“I don’t think we knew we touched each other. It was just myself and ‘Broady’ having a go at each other. I think [Buttler] was just trying to get in between myself and him. There was nothing malicious. He was trying to diffuse the situation. He didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t even see he was there. It was just words from ‘Broady’ and then a retaliation.” Faf du Plessis clarified.
