Aspiring Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Haris is all set for the upcoming U19 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka due next month. The wicketkeeper-batsman is a fan of dashing England keeper-batsman Jos Buttler and said he would treat every opponent in the tournament as equal. Eight teams are set to take part in the competition, including arch-rivals India and Pakistan. Current champions India have won the tournament six times – the most.
“We have been practicing for the past five-six months….We are preparing for every side whether it is India, Afghanistan or Kuwait, our preparations remain the same. Hopefully, we would give our best in the tournament,” Haris, who is busy training at the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre in Karachi, was quoted as saying by Business Recorder.
India and Pakistan, who were joint winners in 2012 after the final ended in a tie, are clubbed in Group A in the upcoming tournament along with Afghanistan and Kuwait. Group B includes hosts Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, and Nepal. Afghanistan are the only other team to have won the championship in 2017 when they thrashed Pakistan by 185 runs in the final. Pakistan had also lost the final of the 2013-14 edition to India by 40 runs.
“I play my natural game, our coach and the management has given me the confidence to play naturally which is the reason behind my performance,” Haris, who wants to make a mark as a wicketkeeper-batsman, was quoted as saying.
Haris wants to play aggressively
The youngster further spoke about his batting style saying he likes to play aggressively and keep the run rate under control. “I play aggressively and try not to become a burden on the team and try to achieve the required run rate.”
The tournament will kick off on September 5 and the final will be played on the 14th. Kuwait, Nepal and the UAE are participating in this tournament as qualifiers while the other five are full members of the International Cricket Council.
India will be led in the tournament by Dhruv Chand Jurel, who is the son of Kargil War veteran Nem Singh Jurel.
