The F1 circuit went upside down earlier this year when seven-time World champion Lewis Hamilton announced his departure from Mercedes. Ending almost a decade-long tie, Hamilton decided to move to Ferrari in 2025. Hamilton’s decision left everyone in shock as no one saw it coming.

However, Hamilton’s former teammate Nico Rosberg has revealed that Hamilton had a desire to represent both legendary teams in his F1 career. He admitted that the decision shocked him but it was not an impossible thing.

In a media interaction, Rosberg said, “Of course, it came as a huge surprise; no one expected it, I didn’t expect it either. But if you look at the grand scheme of things, then why not? It’s towards the end of the career… there’s two legendary teams, it’s Mercedes and Ferrari.”

“I know Lewis has always been a big fan of Ferrari road cars also, so why not make that switch and have a different experience driving in red? Then he can tick off both boxes, he’s driven for the two most legendary teams”, he further added.

Will Hamilton be able to redeem himself?

Despite announcing the move to Ferrari, Hamilton is currently participating in Formula 1 with Mercedes as his contract will come into effect from the 2025 season. However, Hamilton has echoed on multiple occasions that he is looking to finish on a high note for Mercedes.

It’s worth noting that for the last two years, Hamilton has failed to make a podium finish. His below-par performance was evident in the Chinese Grand Prix. Notably, Hamilton finished 18th in the GP qualification but had a second-position finish in the Sprint qualification. However, he failed to get a better result as he finished 9th in Shanghai GP.

Further speaking about his performance and move Nico Rosberg said, “By the way, at the moment, it also seems in performance terms to be the right decision for him. Maybe he makes an amazing move like at the time, 12 years ago, when he moved from McLaren to Mercedes.”

“McLaren were winning races, Mercedes were nowhere, and the moment he moved McLaren went backwards and Mercedes started winning races. Maybe he can get the same stroke of… well, the same timing done again”, he continued.
