'Alive even though by a string!' - Fans react as RCB keep playoff hopes alive in IPL 2024 with a 60-run win over PBKS

Former RCB skipper and batting stalwart Virat Kohli smashed a blistering knock of 92 runs off just 47 balls to help register an all-important win against PBKS.

PBKS and RCB locked horns in the do-or-die, 58th game of the ongoing IPL 2024 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday, May 9, 2024. The match was a virtual eliminator for both teams to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. The hosts’ skipper Sam Curran won the toss and asked RCB to bat first.

Batting first, RCB posted a big total of 241 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of former skipper Virat Kohli’s 9 runs off just 47 balls, with 7 fours and 6 sixes followed by the blistering knocks of 55 and 46 runs scored by Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green off just 23 and 27 balls, respectively.

Star PBKS pacer Harshal Patel bowled brilliantly for his side in the last over of the first innings, scalping 3 wickets. Besides Harshal, Vidwath Kaverappa also claimed 2 wickets, alongside one wicket each picked by Arshdeep Singh and skipper Sam Curran.

Punjab Kings choke in the run-chase

While chasing the target, the Punjab Kings got a good scoring rate in the powerplay but just around the end of the powerplay in the sixth over, they started losing wickets at quick intervals. It was only the number 3 batter Rilee Rossouw who showed some intent and smashed 61 runs off just 27 balls, hitting 9 fours and 3 sixes with the bat followed by Shashank Singh’s crucial 37 runs off just 19 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

However, these efforts went in vain as the Kings were bundled out at the score of 181 runs in 17 overs and lost the match by a big margin of 60 runs. The playoff hopes for PBKS in the IPL 2024 have also been crashed with this defeat against RCB.

On the other hand, RCB has kept their hopes alive in contention for the playoff stage of the tournament.
