Glenn Maxwell becomes latest star to join Major League Cricket 2024 frenzy

With Rachin Ravindra, Travis Head, and now Glenn Maxwell joining Washington Freedom will be a strong team and a big contender to win the title.

Veteran Australian star Glenn Maxwell is set to join the Washington Freedom for the upcoming Major League Cricket 2024 season. The 35-year-old will join Travis Head and Steve Smith who have already confirmed their participation this season. 

The Major League Cricket witnessed some huge names taking part in the league. The first season was a huge success creating a lot of buzz in the US Market regarding the sport. Glenn Maxwell is currently with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru side playing in the IPL 2024 season. 

After a string of low scores, Glenn Maxwell had asked the team management to drop him for the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. RCB went on to lose the game after Hyderabad had scored a massive 287 runs on the board. 

Glenn Maxwell speaks about playing in MLC 2024  

ESPN CRICINFO’s show 'Around the Wicket' sat down to speak to Glenn Maxwell. The Australian star revealed that he had signed with the Washington Freedom to play in the Major League Cricket 2024 season. 

The 35-year-old said, “Very excited to announce that I’ve joined the Washington Freedom for the MLC tournament this year. It’s a tournament that I watched last year and was extremely excited about hopefully playing in the tournament one day.”

The Australian star also said “Luckily, the timings fell in line this year and I’ve been speaking to Ricky Ponting and a few other players fairly. Certainly, excited to get stuck in. Got some Aussie teammates as well involved.”

MI New York won the inaugural edition of the tournament by beating Seattle Orcas in the finals. Washington Freedom were placed third in the table as they lost their playoff game to eventual winners MI New York. 

Washington Freedom also has players like Steve Smith, Marco Jansen, Akeal Hossein and former USA Skipper Saurabh Netravalkar. Current Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting is the man who will be tasked with helping Washington Freedom get their hands on the title this year. Former Australian star Moises Henriques is the captain of the Washington-based team. 

The tournament is set to start on the 4th of July with six teams in contention for the first ever cricket league in the United States of America. With Rachin Ravindra, Travis Head, and now Glenn Maxwell joining Washington Freedom will be a strong team and a big contender to win the title.
