'I'll cheer for the players who make it into the team and...'- Shubman Gill's bold statement on his selection ahead of T20 World Cup 2024

It is often said that after getting the captaincy, players evolve mentally. It seems like the same has happened to Shubman Gill, who is currently the captain of the Gujarat Titans team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This is his first season as a captain, and he has already amazed everyone in the cricket world. However, recently, during an online interview with Vikrant Gupta, Gill gave a bold statement about his selection in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad. 

"After making 900 runs in the last season of the IPL, if I am still not unable to make it into the team, I'll cheer for the players who make it into the team and wish them all the best," said Shubman Gill.

In the 2023 season, Gill played unbelievably well and looked good enough to break Virat Kohli's highest record in the IPL. However, he missed it by a few runs. The point he made regarding the selection seemed fair, as he had scored 900+ runs in the previous year. Hence, selectors should look into the years' stats and not just one season.

At the post-match presentation, Gill discussed the pitch and how the bowlers had to give their best because of the size of the ground. Since the pitches are flat these days, bowlers must be extra careful with the ball and avoid bowling in the wrong areas, which leaks extra runs.  

But this is a smallish ground, we spoke about the same when we went out to chase. Execution becomes very important, if there's a set batter or a finisher, you'll have to execute well. It's okay if there's something in the wicket, but on pitches like this, you'll have to make sure that you execute all your plans perfectly, be it the yorkers or the variations," said Gill.
